n November 2022, tragedy struck the class of 2026 when they found
out their beloved pledge brother, Luke Karel '26, had relapsed with
leukemia for the second time in two years.
The immediate reaction from the entire chapter was to get behind Luke
and help in any way possible. When searching for ways to positively
impact the lives of people battling similar diseases, former President
Adam Jolles '24 contacted Be The Match, a nonprofit organization
dedicated to registering healthy 18- to 40-year-olds and finding potential
matches for donations to patients in need.
The first partnered event was a mouth swabbing at the Beta house open
to all community members. Although there was a large showing from
the student body, to increase engagement across the university, the
chapter decided to host a sorority basketball
tournament focused on registering students
with Be The Match and spreading awareness
about Luke's situation and how to help.
Greek life showed up in huge numbers to
support their chapters, which led to many
KU students joining the registry. Through
Alpha Nu Chapter, the partnership with Beta
National and Be The Match has expanded
nationwide, with many universities hosting
similar events to register students and increase
the donor database.
