Alpha Nu Chapter of Beta Theta Pi P.O. Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested Alpha Nu's Letter T his past August at the 184th Beta General Convention, Alpha Nu Chapter received several awards: The Francis H. Sisson Award for Chapter Excellence, an award for top fraternity grades on campus, and an award for academic excellence in the South-Central Region. Alongside these awards, Brother Adam Jolles '24 had the honor to be an undergraduate keynote speaker. Adam recounted the story of a new member, Luke Karel '26, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia for the second time. As chapter president at the time, Adam was posed with the question, how could Alpha Nu rally behind Luke in these testing times? Earlier in the year, Adam recalled passing a location for Be The Match's national bone marrow donor program while walking by Wescoe Beach. He didn't know much about the registry but chose to donate because Adam knew it could potentially save a life. Adam reached out to Be The Match and organized an event at the Hutt. More than 300 students and friends joined the registry that day, each with the potential to save a life. Due to the diagnosis in the fall, Luke was unable to be initiated with the rest of his pledge class. In another act of brotherhood, the house devised a plan in conjunction with Luke's family and team of doctors. More than 60 Alpha Nu members took an overnight journey to Luke's hometown in Colorado to officially initiate him. The actions taken by Adam and the chapter sparked support across the country from other Beta chapters. Chapters at Duke, Colorado Boulder, Appalachian State, and beyond held donor registry drives of their own. What's Inside?
