Created by Dave Filoni, the series also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Wes Chatham, Hayden Christensen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, David Tennant, Ray stevenson, Temuera Morrison, Lars Mikkelsen, Ivanna sakhno, Eman Esfandi and Diana Lee Inosanto. Reportedly the favorite film of vastly wealthy recluse Howard Hughes, "Ice Station Zebra" clearly is liked a lot by Turner Classic Mov- ies, too … based on how often it's shown there. The channel gives the Alistair MacLean-created 1968 adventure another run Friday, Aug. 25, as part of a "Summer Under the Stars" trib- ute day to co-star Ernest Borgnine. The picture is a testosterone fest since the cast is virtually all-male, which works for its story of Ameri- can and Soviet military forces racing to be the first to reach the title Arctic outpost – and the desperately coveted contents of a capsule ejected from a fallen satellite. Rock Hudson plays the com- mander of a U.S. submarine sent to the site on a retrieval mission, but he and his crew aren't the only ones headed there. Russian soldiers also are on a course to the location, traveling by air, and Hudson picks up several people en route: a Soviet defector (Borgnine), a British spy (Patrick McGoohan) and a Marine superior (Jim Brown). The tensions among the latter three run quite high, complicating Hudson's assign- ment considerably. John Sturges, a filmmaker known for brawny tales ("The Magnificent Seven," "The Great Escape"), was an ideal choice to direct "Ice Sta- tion Zebra." Its linear storytelling is couched in a big production design that has such aspects as the submarine rising from the depths and submerging back into them, a case of sea sabotage that puts everyone aboard the sub at risk (in a wonderfully tense sequence), and the climactic showdown in a chilly climate. That's clearly a studio set, but it serves its purpose. Borgnine and Brown had both appeared the year before in "The Dirty Dozen," one of the big- gest hits MGM ever had, so the studio wisely cashed in on their action-movie cred by enlisting them again here. "Secret Agent" and "The Prisoner" television star McGoohan's career wasn't hurt by his being in a big-budget feature, and Hudson pretty much got the career revival he had been seeking by playing some- one very much in charge. moviereview By Jay Bobbin Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, Rock Hudson and Patrick Mc- Goohan in "Ice Station Zebra" Military forces race to "Ice Station Zebra" on TCM
