"Winchester '73" (1950): James Stewart is the star of this classic that involves the title rifle, but the picture also is worth watching for early performances by Rock Hudson, "Anthony" (later "Tony") Curtis and Shelley Winters. "High Noon" (1952): A lawman reluctantly readies for a showdown in this seminal Western that brought star Gary Cooper an Oscar. Turner Classic Movies presents the film as part of an all-day "Summer Under the Stars" salute to co-star Katy Jurado on Wednesday, Aug. 16. "Shane" (1953): The title gunfighter (Alan Ladd) being be- seeched to "come back" by a young fan (Brandon de Wilde) is one of the most famous and affecting endings in movie history, courtesy of director George Stevens. "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957): There's star pow- er to spare as Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas play Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in this re-creation of an Old West legend. "Rio Bravo" (1959): A sheriff (John Wayne) and a drunken deputy (Dean Martin) lead the effort against those wanting to spring a rancher's arrested brother in another Howard Hawks-directed genre staple. "The Magnificent Seven" (1960): Director John Sturges' revision of Japan's "Seven Samurai" casts Yul Brynner as the leader of a specially skilled septet defending Mexican villagers against bandits. "How the West Was Won" (1962): It took three direc- tors (including John Ford) and a true all-star cast to assemble this epic originally shown in the Cinerama process, giving view- ers direct perspective on being aboard a runaway raft (among other experiences). "Once Upon a Time in the West" (1968): Iconic as a master of foreign-made Westerns, Sergio Leone reached his peak by directing this epic that notably made Henry Fonda nasty. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969): Paul Newman and Robert Redford lent plenty of humor and charisma to this fanciful profile of the legendary bandit duo. bestof ...
