Religion, ethnic- ity, language, social and cultural practices are elements which en- rich human civilization, adding to the wealth of our diversity. Why should they be allowed to become a cause of division and violence? We demean our common humanity by allowing that to happen." – Nelson Mandela As I write this, it is International Nelson Mandela Day. The United Nations has a copious area dedi- cated to this incredible man of peace on their website. I am encouraged by the work of Nelson Mandela and the United Nations. However some locals are fi lled with fear of the UN as expressed by so many during a recent Quartzsite Town Council meeting at the mention of installing a Peace Pole on Town property. Just because some things are not going well in an organization, that does not mean we must reject it as a whole. Nelson Mandela was an example of how to manage all these issues. United Nations International days are occasions to educate the general public on issues of concern, to mo- bilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to cel- ebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. Nelson Mandela infl uenced great change in South Africa that resonat- ed around the world. He was a pio- neer in ending white minority rule and fostering post-apartheid recon- ciliation in the early 1990s. Before becoming president, Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for stand- ing up to the human rights abuses committed by the apartheid govern- ment against black South Africans. Nelson Mandela's legacy of humil- ity and service lives on not only in South Africa, but also around the world. Mandela was single minded in his approach to the enormous task of racial discrimination. Today, society is confronted with many other forms of intolerance that lead to discrimi- nation and oppression. In addition to racism, you can add sexism, age- ism, fat phobia, ableism, homopho- bia and classism as barriers to unity and equal human rights for all. "I believe that in the end that it is kindness and accommodation that are all the catalysts for real change." – Nelson Mandela Do you need assistance with school supplies?
