Leah Moore is an artist and senior at UNC-Pembroke. Her poster entry was selected to brand this year's Dog wood Festival, and is the cover for this issue of Up & Coming Weekly. She's an illustrator by trade but is gaining graphic design skills as she navigates her craft. Recently ,she's been expanding her art with oil pastels and acrylic paints, incorporating it with her illustration work. Her love for art started at a young age, and by middle school she already knew she wanted to make art for the rest of her life. Leah says, "Since kindergarten, I didn't really focus any on sports or music, I was always in the art room or in the library. I just focused on taking a lot of art classes and going to art summer camps. I've always found a lot of joy in doing art." W hile talking with Up & Coming Weekly, Leah emphasized the idea of community and diversity when it came to the design. She did her digging and research on past Dog - wood Festival cover winners and branding from previous festivals to help inspire this year's work as well. The winning poster is a bright and colorful homage to the Dog wood Festival spirit, showcasing illustra- tions of beautiful dog wood leaves. It also features a crowd of people with vibrant and unusual color skin tones, using the same color palette throughout the poster to give it a unified and community feel. Leah says, "At first, I was going to go realistic, but the people felt too isolated from each other. W hy not combine the whole thing with using one single color palette?" Just a few weeks away from gradu - ating, when asked where she wants to take her art journey, Leah says "I really hope to go into children's book illustration." Leah made her senior thesis proj- ect a personal project as well and is releasing a children's book she wrote and illustrated herself before graduation. The book is being self- published through Amazon. Congratulations to Leah Moore on winning the poster design com- petition for this year's Dog wood Festival. Stay tuned to Up & Coming Weekly for coverage on her children's book release in the coming weeks.
