By Tom Wing Special to Official Kids Mag What is historic preservation? Historic means something from the past that was important and should be remembered. Preservation means keeping something as it is and protecting it from damage or loss. Historic preservation is when we protect the places, buildings, sites and things from the past for future generations. Sometimes we protect buildings by turning them into museums, but many times we preserve them and turn them into something useful. This process is called rehabilitation. An old building might be rehabilitated into apartments or a restaurant, or an old home might be rehabilitated into an office. Why should we preserve historic places? We learn so much from history. Historic sites can connect us with our past and the people who lived before us. When we study these places, it helps us to understand the way people lived, and we can even learn things that will benefit us in the future! It is important to consider that a building or a place can have different meanings for different people. That is OK, because we all have our own heritage and background, and we are free to look at history through our own eyes. Historic preservation helps us connect with our heritage and make sure that important places are protected in the future. historical places in your community You can easily find historic places near you. The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is an agency that documents, studies and preserves historical places in Arkansas. Your community may have a lot of historic sites, or there may just be a few. Historic sites can be places like cemeteries and churches, old schoolhouses, courthouses, even private homes. You may find a business, post office or government building on the list that you've been to. There might even a historic battlefield near your house! You may also find train depots, bridges, steamboats, and other kinds of transportation on the list that you can check out in person. Sometimes entire neighborhoods or downtown areas make the list. What are some historic sites and buildings in your county? List three of them: 1. __________________________________ 2. __________________________________ 3. __________________________________ Some buildings and historical places have been on the list for a long time, and others were added recently. Which site or building in your community has been listed the longest? Which was listed most recently? Name a site or building in your county or community that is on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places. be a building detective! Pick a historic building in your county. Find pictures of it on the internet or ask your family if you can go visit it, then answer these questions: 1. What is the name and address of the building? 2. What is the building made out of ? 3. What does the building feel like? What is the texture of the building? 4. Do you see any patterns or shapes on the building? (For example, spirals, circles, arches, curved lines, straight lines)? 5. How would you describe the building's "personality" (fun, serious, scary, etc.)? may is historic preservation month crawford county courthouse in Van buren 28 • may 2023 • www.officialkidsmag.com
