W hat does your hometown mean to you? For Scott Mueller '84, he is proud of his roots and family connection to Kingman. Before he found a way to give back to the town, though, he was a young man at K-State looking for a sense of community on campus. FINDING HIS PLACE ON CAMPUS "Coming to K-State, I wanted to be part of a smaller group than just the larger university," Scott said. He decided to join Sigma Phi Epsilon and quickly began making memories with Kansas Beta brothers, like parties before semesters began and various events throughout campus. Scott's Kansas Beta experience opened new doors to leadership opportunities, as he eventually became House President and joined the Order of Omega. These roles helped Scott gain a better understanding of what makes a good leader and why experience and communication are vital to these roles. "One can lead, but the best leaders have experienced firsthand all that they must make decisions on, either directly or through others." A COUNTRYWIDE CAREER Immediately after college, Scott began his 15- year career with Dow Chemical. His various roles with the company took him to Arizona, Michigan, Indiana, and California. While working in California, Scott moved to CDMS, an agricultural data and technology startup company. He worked with the company for 20 years before it was sold in 2021. "There was not one main accomplishment, but really a couple of general ones throughout the years that provide the best memories—those being developing individuals and watching them grow and prosper as well as taking an idea and turning it into a business that, ultimately, someone else wants to acquire." GIVING BACK Through all his relocations, Scott has kept his hometown of Kingman, Kansas, close to heart. While visiting his father, Scott recognized what he could do to help the rural town prosper once again. "I decided that, if I could bring a building or two on Kingman Historic Main Street back to life, maybe it would help," Scott said. "It is now five years later, and Kingman is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. The community has been the reason—the people. The buildings I renovated were just a catalyst." Scott is glad to keep both his hometown and fraternal connections, often seeing alumni brothers in Manhattan every year at sporting events and the Rob Regier '88 Memorial Golf Tournament. Since moving to Kansas City in 2020, Scott has also enjoyed individual connections with brothers in the area and on social media. Scott met his wife, Kalynn, through Kansas Beta as a little sister of Pi Phi at K-State. They have two adult children, Anne and Kent, both of whom had their weddings in 2022. Scott enjoys staying active through cycling, hiking, traveling, and spending time outdoors. You can connect with Scott at scottmueller61@gmail.com.
