ALPHA-PHI ZETA OF LAMBDA CHI ALPHA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA SPRING 2023 DOING OUR PART AS ALUMNI Butch Camp, AΦ888 Shares Why He Became a Volunteer B utch Camp, AΦ888 decided to volunteer with Alpha-Phi Zeta not long after the initiation of his son, Harrison Camp, AΦ1319. The Chapter House was in poor condition and alumni support was weak, so seeing Harrison join motivated Butch to do his part; he has stayed on as a volunteer ever since. For the last 20 years, Butch has enjoyed building relationships with young Lambda Chi Alpha brothers and providing support and guidance through their college years. "The opportunity to make an impact on our young men is daunting," he says, "but filled with satisfaction when you are able to celebrate their successes!" Butch accepted a Lambda Chi bid after visiting the Chapter House his freshman year. There was "a great band and lovely ladies," but he was most impressed with the kind brothers and their interest in getting to know prospective members. He strove to emulate the strong leaders in the Chapter, going on to serve as social chairman and High Alpha. (Harrison later became High Alpha as well; he now serves on the House Corporation and has a career at the Federal Reserve in Atlanta, Georgia.) Butch also met his wife, Dana Harris, during a shaving cream battle in the Chapter House front yard; they have now been married 44 years. Through the challenges that Alpha-Phi Zeta has faced since March 2020— from shutting down that spring to navigating online classes and events over the last school year—Butch is proud of the Chapter and its strong leadership. "The Chapter has successfully attracted over 40 associate members despite COVID difficulties, and they are positioned for a strong year. I do believe they are up to the challenge and will make us all proud!" When Butch thinks of vital alumni support, he thinks of leaders such as Mike Ermert, AΦ1004 and William Hutson, AΦ946, who spearheaded the Chapter's capital campaign. He also thinks of the campaign's generous donors, such as Charles McPherson, AΦ610, who also established an annual scholarship for a deserving Lambda Chi brother. Butch hopes these kinds of commitments and financial support from alumni will continue well into the future— and that more brothers from younger generations will do their part and get involved. Butch is now 20 years retired from a fulfilling financial career at BellSouth/AT&T. Both in his career and Lambda Chi, he has enjoyed the opportunity to mentor highly competent young people. Many of his former colleagues have had successful corporate careers, and he predicts the same for the student leaders he works with at Alpha-Phi Zeta.
