T22 WHATS UP! February 19 - 25, 2023 The Late Show With Stephen Colbert So now both Joe Biden and Mike Pence have been found to have material dating from the time that they were vice-president. This never used to happen. Pre- vious veeps had methods to dis- pose of this kind of thing: Al Gore would immediately recy- cle documents and Dick Cheney, of course, would shoot them in the face. Yesterday [Jan. 24], citing the war in Ukraine, a group of scien- tists updated the position of the Doomsday Clock, which is used to symbolize the likelihood of people doing something to end humanity. Kind of a downer, but still less depressing than any watch that counts your steps. As a market watcher, I've been a bit worried because a lot of folks out there have been forecasting a coming recession. Well, today [Jan. 26] we've got some positive news, because in the last quarter of 2022, the GDP increased 2.9%, ladies and gentlemen. Unex- pected. Nobody saw that com- ing. We're all 2.9% richer and I'm gonna blow it on 2.9 eggs. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon A dozen classified documents were just found at Mike Pence's house in Indiana. The craziest part about these documents that were found, they were found stuffed between a dozen Wu- Tang albums. When the news broke, Pence was so embar- rassed he turned clear. Appar- ently, Pence brought the docu- ments home when he blacked out during a 3 a.m. milk binge. Everyone's still talking about all the classified documents that keep popping up, and now spokespeople are saying that, until the end of their terms, all classified documents were re- turned by Obama, Bush and Clinton. In other words, we're five minutes away from learning that they found documents at the homes of Obama, Bush and Clinton. Meanwhile, when asked if he had any classified docu- ments, Dick Cheney put his heart into sleep mode. Some news from Washington: a bill was just introduced in Con- gress that would ban TikTok in the U.S. Good idea. Without Tik- Tok, the only way China can spy on us is through our phones, fridges and smart toasters. Yeah, they want to ban TikTok. Gen Z is like, "You'll have to pry it from our cold, dead tortillas." I'm sure Biden is all over this. A week ago, he thought TikTok was a breath mint. Jimmy Kimmel Live! Last night [Jan. 23], Mike Lindell, who says he understands the voting system data better than anyone else, had a little bit of trouble wrapping his head around the virtual background feature on Zoom. You can feel extra excitement in the air because Eddie Murphy is here tonight [Jan. 25], which is very exciting. He's here to talk about his new comedy, 'You Peo- ple,' which is very funny. Eddie plays the father of a Black wom- an who is getting married to a white man and the reviews are excellent. Tucker Carlson called it "the scariest movie I've ever seen." Twenty years ago to the day, our show, on Jan. 26, 2003, premiered live after the Super Bowl, and right out of the gate, we were an immediate hit. Next day, The New Yorker said, "'Jimmy Kim- mel Live,' a dead-on-arrival talk show with a charisma-free host." Late Night With Seth Meyers CNN has reported that a lawyer for former vice-president Mike Pence found a dozen classified documents last week at Pence's Indiana home. OK, so they're just in every home? That's the only thing that makes sense any- more. When you buy a new house and you move in, there's just classified documents sitting on the counter next to that half roll of paper towels and box of baking soda. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters yesterday [Jan. 24] that if the Ethics Committee finds that New York Congress- man George Santos broke the law, "then we will remove him." So, I guess it's up to the chair- man of the Ethics Committee ... oh, no, it's George Santos! LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media 'Garage' closed: Jay Leno and NBCUniversal have enjoyed a 30-year partnership, with the former "Tonight Show" host ap- pearing on at least one of NBC's channels or platforms since he took over the late-night show from Johnny Carson in 1992. But that impressive run may now have come to an end: his most recent NBCUniversal show, the Emmy-winning "Jay Leno's Garage," has been can- celed by CNBC after seven sea- sons. Leno launched the series shortly after departing "The To- night Show" for a second time — the first being in 2009, when he handed over hosting duties to Conan O'Brien before returning in 2010. He continued to host the late-night staple until 2014, when Jimmy Fallon succeeded him, and that's when "Jay Leno's Ga- rage" took off. Starting out as a web series for NBC.com, "Jay Leno's Garage" initially aired as a one-hour spe- cial on CNBC in 2014 and began its run as a weekly series in 2015. It allowed the comedian to in- dulge in his passion for every- thing car- and motorcycle-relat- ed, mixing celebrity interviews with stunts and challenges while delving into the history behind some of the 180-plus cars and 160-plus motorcycles that are in Leno's personal collection. News of the show's cancella- tion last month came on the heels of an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal in which Leno revealed he had suf- fered a broken collarbone, two broken ribs and two cracked kneecaps in a motorcycle acci- dent on Jan. 17. He had also suf- fered third-degree burns in a ga- rage fire in November. Considering this string of un- fortunate incidents, one might assume the cancellation of "Jay Leno's Garage" would give him a bit of a breather, but Leno might not want one. While discussing his injuries, he indicated he was, "OK … I'm working this week- end," and he has several upcom- ing comedy shows, so he may al- ready be thinking of his next big project. Kidman's 'Nanny': After picking up acting and producing Emmy awards for "Big Little Lies," and after earning positive reviews for her star turn in "The Undoing," Nicole Kidman is ex- tending her collaboration with HBO. Kidman is teaming up with "PEN15" co-creator/co-lead Maya Erskine to bring Leïla Sli- mani's novel "The Perfect Nan- ny" to small screens as a limited series. Erskine is credited as the creator and series writer and will star opposite Kidman; both will serve as executive produc- ers. The novel, which was pub- lished in 2016 and became a much-lauded international best- seller, was inspired by the real- life murder of Lucia and Leo Krim in 2012. The fictional work — and now this HBO limited se- ries — tells the story of a seem- ingly perfect nanny who is hired by a couple to care for their two young children, but "her helpful personality eventually deterio- rates into something more sinis- ter" per HBO, which is co-pro- ducing the series with Legend- ary Entertainment. It's the latest project for both actresses. Erskine, whose acting credits include roles in "Inse- cure" and "Obi-Wan Kenobi," is hard at work on Amazon Prime Video's "Mr. And Mrs. Smith" TV reboot, which is currently in production. As for Kidman, viewers will next see the Oscar winner in the Amazon Prime series "Expats"; the Netflix romantic comedy "A Family Affair," which has a No- vember release; and in the up- coming film "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which is expect- ed to hit theaters in December. She also serves as both execu- tive producer and star of Paramount+'s "Lioness," which is currently in production and also features "Avatar" (2009) star Zoe Saldana; and of Amazon Studios' "Holland, Michigan," which is scheduled to go into production later this year. Leaving 'Los Angeles': It is one of the longest-running scripted shows currently on CBS, but after 14 seasons, "NCIS: Los Angeles" is winding down. The network has decided to end the popular drama, which stars LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell, after 322 episodes. This current season will be its last, and the finale has already been scheduled for May 14 on both the network and Para- mount+. This is disappointing news for fans, to be sure, though LL Cool J had a more positive outlook on Instagram, where he pointed out that the recent "NCIS" cross- over event gave the series a nice boost before winding down: "Af- ter 14 seasons, this is the perfect time to end @ncisla on top of our game!!!" According to Deadline, the cancellation came as a surprise to many associated with the pro- cedural drama, which is still gar- nering strong ratings. Still, big- name leads and a Los Angeles shooting location don't come cheap, and there's speculation that cost-cutting may have fac- tored into CBS's decision to end the show's run. On the bright side, the May 14 finale should allow the "NCIS: Los Angeles" production and writing teams, led by showrun- ner R. Scott Gemmill, to bring the storylines to a satisfying con- clusion.
