Page 6 Lester "Les" Duane Green '47-535 passed away on July 8, 2021. He lost his mother at a young age, and he and his brother were placed on a farm owned by the Carter family. He looked up to Joe Carter '36-258 and Doug Carter '39-293, who both joined Lambda Chi Alpha at Oregon State. When Les joined the fraternity upon returning from World War II, he was considered a legacy. While at Oregon State, he met his future wife, Marylou McKay, a Kappa. Les transferred to the University of Oregon for its history program. After graduating in 1950, he was offered a position to join his brother-in-law, Wayne Hadley, at their father-in-law's business, Douglas McKay Chevrolet. In 1955, the dealership became Capitol Chevrolet Cadillac, and it later evolved into Capitol Auto Group. Les was the soul of the business and was a wonderful father, grandfather, and citizen. He was instrumental in early downtown and Salem Riverfront development and was recognized as Salem's First Citizen in 1977. He was on the founding board of directors for Illahe Hills Country Club and was the Salem Hospital Board chairman when the two hospitals merged in 1969. Les was passionate about Lambda Chi Alpha and Oregon State. Murray Dorsey '48-560 passed away on April 4, 2022. Murray was born in Corvallis and met his wife, Lou, at Oregon State University. Murray's grandfather founded Dorsey Bus Co. in 1909, and Murray and Lou were the third generation to operate the company. They sold it after 76 years. After retiring, Murray and Lou enjoyed traveling around the world, skiing, and boating. Paul Harper '48-561 passed away on October 1, 2018, in Albuquerque, NM. Paul was drafted soon after graduating from high school and served in the U.S. Army in World War II, from 1943 to 1945. Among other battles, Paul fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he earned the Bronze Star. Upon returning to the U.S., he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. He decided not to pursue a military career and left West Point after being honorably discharged from the Army. He then used the G.I. Bill and enrolled at Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1946, where he met Patty Lugenbeel. They were married on December 17, 1948. After graduating with a master's degree in mathematics, Paul accepted employment at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He worked at the lab for 32 years and together with Patty raised their four sons. In 1961 and 1963, he took leaves of absence from the lab and earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Oklahoma State University. After retirement, Paul and Patty lived in a cabin near Chama, NM, for 22 years and traveled extensively across North America in their Jimmy and trailer. In 2005, they purchased a townhome in Albuquerque where they lived during the colder months. Paul enjoyed playing guitar, hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Bert G. Babb Jr. '51-Associate Member passed away on May 1, 2022. During spring break at OSU, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean conflict, reaching the rank of corporal, and earning multiple medals for his service. When Bert came home on his first leave, he married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley, on October 9, 1953. After the war, Bert worked days at McKay's Market in Santa Clara, nights at Lane Plywood, and filled in at Zeke's Tavern on River Road. He later became district manager of McKay's Market, then on to serve as head buyer and ad writer for Mayfair Markets' stores in Oregon and Washington. In 1969, Bert and Shirley bought Harold's Market in Veneta, then in 1984, they built the West Lane Shopping Center and opened Babb's West Lane Thriftway. Bert was named Man of the Year in 1991 at the West Lane Distinguished Service Awards. He was passionate about giving back to his community, and he and Shirley helped several of their box boys/girls with college tuition, books, and housing. Bert served on many grocery boards and was inducted into the OFI Grocery Hall of Fame in 1995. Having served as an OSU Foundation trustee, Bert was known as the 'Booster among Boosters' for the impact that he and his wife Shirley had on many OSU and Beaver Athletics projects over the years. The Bert and Shirley Babb Players Lounge at Goss Stadium is named in recognition for their instrumental efforts. One specific project was providing funding to install lights for night baseball games in 2002. The lights were essential to having the Beavers host playoff games and to have a shot at the College World Series. His influence and charisma will never be forgotten by his friends and family.
