Empowering Women around the World WUNRN Founder Lois Horsley Herman '62 Has a Mission to Support Others Being an Advocate Lois Horsley Herman '62 has been an advocate for women's rights since the beginning. In 2003, after a successful career in food marketing and encouragement from the United Nations, she pursued her passion to support other women and founded the Women's UN Report Network, which addresses the human rights, oppression and empowerment of women and girls around the world. "I find that WUNRN has connected me to women and girls all over the world, and our shared but also diverse issues and dimensions," Lois noted. WUNRN provides releases of research and news of gender equality issues and more as a tool for women's rights advocacy. Its ListServe, considered the most expansive international gender information resource, highlights what is happening with women around the world and is sent to subscribers daily. As the founder and managing director of WUNRN, Lois has had the opportunity to live abroad and travel extensively, organizing panels across the world to speak on a variety of issues, with more than 20 in Geneva, Switzerland. One of the panels, held in 2019, discussed the abandonment of baby girls and widows in China. Lois is proud to be making a difference as a part of something greater than herself, and she has had a rewarding experience. In 2015, she received the Spirit of the United Nations Award in New York City. Staying Connected to the Sisterhood Alpha Chi Omega has continued to prove itself as the right match for Lois for many years, and she holds the sisterhood close to her heart. Her sisters have encouraged and inspired her since college, and even when she was across the world, she kept in touch. "During the 12 years I lived in Italy, I realized the significance of campus and the alumnae sisterhood that was not available in Europe," she shared. The bond that Lois' pledge sisters have is truly special to her. Over the years, they have stayed connected through reunions and annual newsletters. About two years ago, they decided to switch to video calls on the last Thursday of each month, and these get-togethers have been important to Lois. She is grateful for her connection with not only Alpha Beta members, but also all Alpha Chi sisters. The power of the sisterhood was especially evident when Lois received the Alpha Chi Award at Convention. "I will always be thankful that I had the opportunity to be part of Alpha Chi Omega; my ties with the sorority run deep." Continuing the Mission Lois continues to work full-time at WUNRN, and while she doesn't have much time for hobbies, she is proud to live an active and interesting life. She remembers being a majorette in the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band all four years and hopes to one day march in the Purdue Alumni Band. She has four children, three of which are half Ukrainian on their late father's side. Her youngest son is an adopted foreign orphan from Colombia. She also has an amazing cat.
