INSIDE: A Dream Come True Chapter Officers 2 Maintaining Sigma Chi Traditions 3 Please Join Us in Welcoming Our New House Director 4 Standard Bearer The Fall 2022 Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi I n the spring of 2012, alumni and friends gathered at the Sigma Chi house, and we "burned the note," signifying that we were debt-free from our early 1990s renovation. Several of us knew that we needed to begin the process of another renovation. We had outgrown our dining room and chapter room, and our dorm section was in dire need of an upgrade. We began to talk about ways to reconnect with our alumni and make them aware of our needs. Jon Fisher '84 asked me to help in an advisory capacity. I will always be grateful for that invitation. In 2017, I took over house corporation responsibilities from Bob Black '63. We began a focused effort to build our communications and start a serious renovation planning process. We engaged Pryor-Morrow Architects and began the long process of working with the university to get the project approved. Pennington & Company, the leader in fraternity and sorority fundraising, was hired to assist with our capital campaign. Many of our dedicated alumni pitched in and looked at endless lists of names. We built a database and a strategy to raise the needed funds. To reconnect with our alumni, we resurrected a communications tool that many of us were familiar with from our undergraduate days—this newsletter. Many of you participated in a feasibility study. The message from that study was clear: you were ready to support a campaign to renovate our fraternity house. Designs were finalized and budgets came together. I had the privilege of sitting in the boardroom at Yates Construction, where Bill Yates '63 assured me that they would take care of this project for Sigma Chi. I want to thank Bill, his family, and his company for delivering on that promise. Hampton Thames '84 shepherded us through the loan process, bringing some great banks to the table. Thank you, Hampton. COVID-19 sidetracked us with project delays and upset the routine of Greek life at Ole Miss. The chapter endured almost a year with no house to meet and socialize in. We improvised, pivoted, and adapted. Thank you to the men of Eta Chapter for your patience and support. Just recently, we initiated our second pledge class in our new chapter room. Forty-one men are making their home in the Sigma Chi house. Meals are being served, events held, and the brotherhood is thriving. In short—we did it! Over 200 of you helped us overachieve our campaign goal. Thank you for contributing. I hope you have the opportunity to see what your donations have done—the pictures do not do it justice. As we wind down the capital campaign, know that you will continue to hear from us. New advisors have stepped up to lead, and the active chapter is building its communication capabilities. As for me, I have decided that a decade is enough. I am stepping down as president of the house corporation at the end of 2022. Our advisory team is making plans for someone to take over my role. It has been my honor to serve you, my brothers, in this capacity. Sigma Chi has given much to my family for three generations. Thank you for letting me give a little back to it over the last 10 years.
