Quartzsite Events Online: QuartzsiteCalendar.com Nancy's Kitchen It was a dark and stormy night … when Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy arrive at the spooky Laurel mansion in this month's short fi lm, 1930's "The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case," showing at the Sons of the Desert Quarzsite Night Owls meeting on Sept. 30. Vagrants Stan and Ollie are fi shing at the pier when their fi nancial out- look suddenly brightens as Ollie learns that the wealthy Ebenezer Laurel has died and his heirs are being sought for the reading of the will. When the boys arrive at the mansion, however, they learn that Ebenezer was murdered and all of his relatives are suspects. Watch this fi lm closely for Oliver Hardy's fi rst time uttering the phrase he's probably most known for – "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into." In this month's feature fi lm, "Saps at Sea," (1940) Laurel & Hardy work in a horn factory, where Ollie goes berserk. Dr. Finlayson, played by the incomparable James Finlayson, diagnoses Hardy with "hornophobia" and prescribes an ocean voyage to calm his nerves. Stan suggests rent- ing a boat and keeping it tied to the dock. But when an escaped criminal stows aboard their boat, the boys end up at sea, and try to come up with a plan to incapacitate their unwanted guest. Ultimately, Stan plays his trombone, throwing Ollie into a horn-induced rage and thwarting the criminal. Sons of the Desert Quartzsite Night Owls meets from 3-4:30 p.m. on the last Friday of each month at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 30 Church St., Quartzsite, AZ., off of West Cowell Street just east of the Quartzsite Senior Center. On Oct. 28 the fi lms will include the Spanish-language "La Vida Noctur- na" (1930) - a remake of their fi lm "Blotto" – and "Big Noise" (1944). On Nov. 25, it's the 1930 short "Another Fine Mess," followed by the 1941 feature "Great Guns." The Night Owls tent will close out the year on Dec. 30 with the 1931 short "Be Big" and 1943's "Jitterbugs." Light refreshments will be served and membership information for the club will be available. Quartzsite Night Owls is a registered offi cial tent of the Sons of the Desert International Laurel & Hardy Appreciation Soci- ety. Everyone of any age is welcome to come enjoy the fi lms of Laurel & Hardy. Meetings are free, although donations are accepted gladly. Sons of the Desert is devoted to keeping the lives and works of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy before the public, and to have a good time while doing it. The group takes its name from a lodge that the comedians be- long to in the 1933 fi lm "Sons of the Desert." In keeping with the tongue- in-cheek "desert" theme, each local chapter of the society is called a "tent," and is named after a Laurel & Hardy fi lm. Worldwide, there are well over 100 active tents, whose members meet regularly to enjoy Lau- rel & Hardy movies in an informal atmosphere. "It is important, I think, to realize that Sons of the Desert is not a fan club," explained John McCabe, the team's biographer, who founded the Sons in 1965. "The word 'fan' derives from 'fanatic' and I hope we are none of us that. I consider us 'buffs,' people having a connoisseur-like affection for Laurel & Hardy, and being discriminating in that affection, with fun as our goal and operative guide."
