There's the X-Scream ride, the only one
that exists in the world. It's a high-action thrill
ride for the daring! Then there's the Eclipse,
another exciting experience that's the only
one like it in the United States.
The Surf's Up ride is mild enough for the
young ones, but teenagers love it too. It's
a big, giant surfboard that rocks back and
forth over a 100-foot-long track. The main
difference with this ride is you're actually
standing up.
Once again this year, instead of having to
purchase individual tickets or wristbands for
the rides, there will be one flat fee to enter
the fair during carnival hours and that fee will
include unlimited access to all of the rides.
Everybody coming through the gate will
pay $10 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Friday and Saturday fees are $15 per person.
a trip back in time: what the first
Benton county Fair was like
The first Benton County Fair happened
way back in 1904. In those days, an acre of
land could be purchased $5, and a dish of ice
cream cost 19 cents.
Back then, Bentonville and the
surrounding area was covered in
thousands of acres of fruit orchards,
mostly apples.
The Fair was originally called the
Benton County Free Fruit Fair. It took
place around the Benton County
courthouse and the downtown
Square in Bentonville. People came to
see exhibits like canned fruits, jellies,
preserves and wines along with farm and
garden products, art, flowers, plants and
needlework. They tied the livestock to the
east side of buildings on the Square.
In those days—the same as today—the
county fair was an opportunity for young
people to display and win awards for a
year's worth of hard work, long hours, and
dedication to their projects in 4-H clubs.
There was a carnival with a merry-go-
round and ferris wheel. Entertainment
included high-wire acts and a high-diving dog.
There was a man who drove a car around the
Square blindfolded (without hitting anyone or
anything!) and another person playing music
on the rims of partially-filled water glasses.
