By Karen Rice Official Kids Mag The Clydesdale horse breed originated from farm horses in Clydesdale, Scotland around the middle of the 18th century. They are known for their beauty, impressive size and strength, unique "feathering" around their hooves, and sweet and gentle nature. In 1998, a man named Bob Funk visited the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he met and fell in love with the rare and beautiful black and white Clydesdales. Mr. Funk wanted to bring Clydesdales to his home state of Oklahoma, a state known for its love of horses. Now Mr. Funk has a team of Clydesdale horses, and they travel all over the United States and Canada. They have appeared in The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Tournament of Roses Parade and many other events across the nation. This month, we're all in luck because six of these beautiful and rare horses will be making their way from their historic barn in Yukon, Oklahoma to the Benton County Fair! "I respect and admire these gentle giants and enjoy seeing kids' sense of awe when they are up close to these majestic animals," says Mr. Funk. This is the first time the Clydesdales will visit the Fair. You have got to see them to believe it! Meet the clydesdales The Clydesdales are a breed called draft horses, and so they are very large, powerful and strong. They have broad, muscular chests and stand about 18 hands tall, (that's about 6 feet tall!) That, along with their strong forelegs makes them good runners and excellent at hauling and lifting heavy loads. Clydesdales have white spots and markings on their face and legs. They have long feathery white hair around their hooves. they wear big shoes! Clydesdales are known for their giant feet, the size of a dinner plate! Their hooves are very large, to help protect their feet. A horseshoe for a Clydesdale usually weighs about 5 pounds, which is about 4 times the size of a regular horseshoe! they're big eaters! The Clydesdales weigh about 2,000 pounds (one ton) each. They eat about 2-10 pounds of grain and 25-50 pounds of hay every day! At the Fair, each horse will be wearing fancy handcrafted English leather show harnesses. The harnesses weigh about 180 pounds and cost about $10,000 each! they "talk" to each other! Clydesdale horses communicate by neighing, rubbing, and nuzzling with each other. They also have many different facial expressions to send messages and communicate with each other. their ears move in all directions! The Clydesdale horse has movable ears; that is, they can adjust and move their ears in whichever direction, which helps them adjust their ears according to the direction of the sound. they are gentle giants Although they are big and strong, Clydesdales are known for their sweet and gentle nature. "Their size is huge, beauty is breathtaking and their magnitude projects such power….yet these Gentle Giants draw people in through their docile and gentle spirit," says Express Clydesdales manager Josh Minshull. You can come and meet the Express Clydesdales Team every day during the Benton County Fair (Tuesday, September 27 – Saturday, October 1) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the horse arena.
