During this course, angela Beaulieu, a health and wellness coach with over 10 years in the fitness industry will teach olli participants how to stay fit and ac- tive as you age. she will discuss the im- portance of sleep, along with what foods to focus on eating to keep your body strong and your mind sharp. angela will share exercises that promote flexibility and balance (this part will be a interac- tive, but will do most in a chair or stand- ing in front of it.) Wear loose, comfortable clothing to the session. instruCtor: angela Beauleiu DAy/DAte: thursday, 12/1/22 (1) time: 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: olli Cost: $19.00 olli Member $34.00 non-olli Member winter BotAny DesCriPtion: Plant identification can be challenging, especially during the cold winter months when many species have gone dormant. luckily, even during this bleak time of year, plants provide us with plenty of clues to identify what species a tree, shrub, or woody vine is. eric fuselier, an environmental scientist at olsson, will teach us about these clues and how, even during the wintertime, botany can still be a fun way to spend time outdoors. this is a two-session class. the first session will be held in-person in the classroom. Dur- ing the second session, participants will have a chance to apply what they've learned in the field during a winter botany walk at lake fay- etteville. instruCtor: eric fuselier DAy/DAte: fridays, 12/2/22 - 12/9/22 (2) time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: DraKe & lake fayetteville (lf) Cost: $29.00 olli Member $44.00 non-olli Member Forestry DeteCtiVe 103: reADing the eFFeCts oF enLighteneD negLeCt on oLD growth Forest DesCriPtion: the Pea ridge Battle- field reservation has shielded the mature oak- hickory forest on the north slope of elkhorn Mountain from disturbance for many decades. What is thought to be the natural frequency of fire has been maintained by controlled burns in this area and serves as an example of how such management influences the appearance of the forest. Dr. fred Paillet will investigate how well this treatment has acted to suppress the infiltra - tion of mesic tree species while looking for any remaining traces of the famous 1863 battle. af- ter hiking about a mile into this forest the group will arrive at a small sandstone alcove with a seasonally flowing waterfall and an interesting clonal stand of unusually large pawpaw trees. forest Detective classes will be based on ma- terial from the Ozark Forest Forensics book available online at the ozark society web page. if anyone would like to order this book, please contact Dr. fred Paillet as he is offering a special author's reduced price of $15. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Bring a bag lunch and bottle of water. AgAin DesCriPtion: this class will examine the controversy regarding the C&h hog farm that was permitted near the Buffalo national river. it is an arkansas political story where we will explore the tensions between the state's two largest industries: agriculture and tourism. Brian thompson, author of Saving the Buffalo River...Again, will review how the C&h opera- tion was permitted, why the location was par- ticularly geologically sensitive, how our state institutions performed, the scientific monitor- ing efforts that were implemented, the legis- lative and legal actions that occurred, and fi- nally, the advocacy efforts by river supporters and how they were sustained over the course of seven years. lastly, we will review what ac- tually turned the tide, politically, leading to the farm's eventual closure as well as the risks that remain. instruCtor: Brian thompson DAy/DAte: tuesday, 12/6/22 (1) time: 10:00 aM - 12:00 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: DraKe Cost: $25.00 olli Member $40.00 non-olli Member reCent LAnDsCAPe-sCALe ArChAeoLogiCAL reseArCh in ArKAnsAs DesCriPtion: Cutting-edge remote sensing technologies have revolutionized ar- chaeology in arkansas and around the world. researchers can now access beneath the sur- face of the ground to guide precision exca- vations -- and to gain insights even without excavation. new methods also enable archaeo- logical site mapping from high above -- pen- etrating dense foliage to visualize prehistoric and historic human alterations to the ground surface. Dr. Jamie lockhart, ua Department of anthro- pology, presents highlights of recent research integrating geophysical remote sensing, aerial photo interpretation, image processing, laser light Detection and ranging (liDar) analy - sis, gis data development, and modeling for archeological projects and cultural landscape studies in arkansas. instruCtor: Dr. Jami J. lockhart DAy/DAte: tuesday, 12/6/22 (1) time: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: aras Cost: $19.00 olli Member $34.00 non-olli Member Dog minD DesCriPtion: Dogs are our valued com- panions, but do we know what they are think- ing? When we speculate about their wants and needs, their beliefs, their emotions, are we "anthropomorphizing," projecting our outlooks onto them? understanding our dogs requires that we look at things from their perspectives, but how do we do that, and can we get better at it? What are the implications for how we in - teract with them? ed Minar, Professor and Chair of the Depart- ment of Philosophy at the university of arkan- sas and trainer/roommate to three australian shepherds, will look at what dogs are and at what recent developments in dog science teach us about how to relate to them, with the hope of gaining insight into how best to flour - ish alongside our best friends. new materials and training tips will be covered! instruCtor: ed Minar DAy/DAte: Wednesday, 12/7/22 (1) time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM FormAt: in-Person LoCAtion: PC Cost: $25.00 olli Member $40.00 non-olli Member
