It's been nearly a century since Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy fi rst teamed up on fi lm to create what ultimately became Hollywood's greatest comedy duo. Laurel and Hardy's infl uence on the contem- porary comedians of their day was obvious, but the duo's infl uence ex- tends across the decades to current comedians too. "From Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, to Key and Peele, Mu- laney and Kroll, all those guys owe something to Laurel and Hardy be- cause they perfected that modern comedy duo act. And you can see the echoes of their work in every- thing," actor John C. Reilly, who portrayed Hardy in the 2018 fi lm "Stan and Ollie," told Variety. "Lau- rel and Hardy are the original con- trast couple. They're like salt and pepper, light and shadow, fat and skinny, Laurel and Hardy. They're like yin and yang. There's an eternal quality to them." For those who want to go back to the source, the Sons of the Desert Quartzsite Night Owls will meet again on Friday, July 29, presenting two more Laurel and Hardy classics. Leave the July Arizona heat outside for a short time with "Below Zero" (1930). It's the winter of 1929 and street musicians Laurel and Hardy are doing their best to cheer the ill- tempered citizens of a snowy neigh- borhood. With Hardy on string bass and Laurel on harmonium, their rep- ertoire of two songs is unappreciated by the residents. Their luck changes briefl y when they fi nd a wallet. Un- fortunately, it belongs to a police- man, whom they try to treat to lunch using his own money. Believing that they picked his pocket, the cop leaves the boys to the wrath of a restaura- teur and his burly waiter without the funds to pay for their lunch. The fi lm's setting may look chilly, but on the fi rst day of fi lming in Feb- ruary 1930, the actors were bundled up against an uncomfortable South- ern California high temperature of 89 degrees, according to the third edition of Randy Skretvedt's "Laurel & Hardy: The Magic Behind the Movies." In 1932's "Pack Up Your Troubles," Stan and Ollie play World War I doughboys whose friend is killed in battle. Following the end of the war, the boys take care of their friend's orphaned daughter. They experi- ence many misadventures as they try to locate the little girl's grand- parents, a Mr. and Mrs. Smith who live "somewhere in New York City." Ultimately the boys reluctantly rob a bank to fi nance their efforts. They are captured, but all is forgiven when the bank president turns out to be their late wartime buddy's father. Sons of the Desert Quartzsite Night Owls meets from 3-4:30 p.m. on the last Friday of each month at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 30 Church St., Quartzsite, AZ., off of West Cowell Street just east of the Quartzsite Senior Center. On Aug. 24, the fi lms will include "Hog Wild," (1930) and "Our Rela- tions," (1936). The Sept. 30 fi lms will include "The Laurel & Hardy Murder Case," (1930) followed by "Saps at Sea" (1940) and on Oct. 28, the Spanish-language "La Vida Noc- turna" (1930) - a remake of their fi lm "Blotto" – and "Big Noise" (1944). Light refreshments will be served and membership information for the club will be available. Quartzsite Night Owls is a registered offi cial tent of the Sons of the Desert Internation- al Laurel & Hardy Appreciation Soci- ety. Everyone of any age is welcome to come enjoy the fi lms of Laurel & Hardy. Meetings are free, although donations are accepted gladly. Sons of the Desert is devoted to keeping the lives and works of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy before the public, and to have a good time while doing it. The group takes its name from a lodge that the comedi- ans belong to in the 1933 fi lm "Sons of the Desert." In keeping with the tongue-in-cheek "desert" theme, each local chapter of the society is called a "tent," and is named after a Laurel & Hardy fi lm. Worldwide, there are well over 100 active tents, whose members meet regularly to enjoy Laurel & Hardy movies in an informal atmosphere. "It is important, I think, to realize that Sons of the Desert is not a fan club," explained John McCabe, the team's biographer, who founded the Sons in 1965. "The word 'fan' derives from 'fanatic' and I hope we are none of us that. I consider us 'buffs,' people having a connois- seur-like affection for Laurel & Har- dy, and being discriminating in that affection, with fun as our goal and operative guide."
