Operation Halyard was the largest and most successful rescue mission of American aircrews in our nation's history. Learn how between August through December 1944, a three-man Office of Strategic Services team, Serbian anti-fascist/anti-communist partisans, known as "Chetniks," and the 1st Air Crew Rescue Unit of the U.S. 15th Air Force, airlifted more than 500 U.S. airman out of Serbia. Operation Halyard: The Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II is on loan from the Halyard Mission Foundation and will be displayed in the U.S Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum lobby through Nov. 13. SATURDAY, JULY 23 CITY MARKET FAYETTEVILLE HISTORY MUSEUM 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. City Market at the Museum is a year-round, open-air market featuring local produce and artisans. Typical offerings include blended teas, handmade pottery, soaps, soy candles, glass beaded jewelry, han- dblown glass, tie dyes, crystals, watercolors, custom designs, cookies, muffins, specialty coffee, music and much more. The market is held on the grounds of the Fayetteville History Museum. Built in 1890, the Fayetteville History Museum is a living link to downtown Fayetteville's past. From Native American trails to steam- boats and trains, explore the importance of the early trade communities of Cross Creek and Campbellton. This museum outlines the development of the plank road system that connected Fayetteville to other towns throughout North Carolina. Afri- can American slave labor was used to build the plank roads. Formerly, the building was home to the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad Company, which opened in Fayetteville in 1879 as a reorganization of the former Western railroad. GARDEN GONE WILD CAPE FEAR BOTANICAL GARDEN noon – 5 p.m. Join Cape Fear Botanical Garden for an unusual safari with the "Garden Gone Wild" Topiary Exhibit. Eleven topiaries made of living plants will take over the Garden — all of which have never been seen in Fayetteville before! The topiaries are on loan from Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio. The topiaries, filled with living materials to resemble various animals and insects, will reside at the Garden through Dec. 31. TAI CHI CAPE FEAR BOTANICAL GARDEN 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Practice tai chi, a flowing eastern exercise with instructor Rich Martin while overlook- ing the garden. This event is held every Tuesday indoors or outside depending on the weather. Prices are $15 for a single class. Registration is available for purchase in the gift shop. TUESDAY, JULY 26 FRIDAY, JULY 22 4TH FRIDAY DOWNTOWN FAYETTEVILLE 6 p.m. – 9 p.m Join downtown Fayetteville as the District comes alive with performances every 4th Friday of the month. During the 4th Friday event, visitors can check out over 200 businesses, restaurants and attractions. There will be a variety of buskers on the streets throughout the District. Join Sweet Tea Shakespeare for the thrilling story of a young prince finding his way in the ancient Mediterranean. Sweet Tea Shake- speare plays provide an interactive play-going experience with live music before every show starting at 6:45 p.m. Most shows feature an array of snacking and drinking options, some of which may constitute a light meal. Food, signature sweet tea, craft beer, wine and seasonal cocktails are available. Outside food and drink are not permitted unless otherwise noted. SUNDAY, JULY 24 FRIDAY, JULY 22 ROCKIN' ON THE RIVER CAMPBELLTON LANDING 6 p.m. Mark your calendars for a fantastic show at the river. Fayetteville Music Hall of Famer, Doyle Wood, and brings his new band, Autumn Tyde, who will take the stage first. Then at 8:15 p.m., the former front man for Sidewinder, Jan Fields, will bring his wheelhouse of vocal range to the river with Rev On, a Tribute to Foreigner. Entry and food and drink sales begin at 5 p.m. Organizers ask that attendees not bring outside bags, con - tainers or coolers. Identification is needed for armbands for alcohol.
