By Karen Rice Offical Kids Mag Did you know there are more than 10,000 species of birds worldwide? More than 900 of these species have been sighted in the United States and Canada, and more than 380 have been documented here in The Natural State. The educators at Ponca Education Center want to remind you that you don't have to venture far out your backyard to find many of the birds that call Arkansas home. Four billion birds take to the sky over the United States in annual migrations. Butch Tetzlaff, a local ornithologist (bird expert) who owns The Bluebird Shed in Bella Vista, has observed, "The edges of fly zones going in all four directions pass over the Ozarks. Flocks pursuing their historical flight path— north to summer to breed in the Great Lake region, and south again to the coast— are likely to stop for a while in this area." Tetzlaff estimates that one could possibly see about 300 different species in the region. The Eastern Bluebird is one of the birds that live in Arkansas year-round. You can build a simple Bluebird Box to help the Eastern Bluebird make your backyard home. Nature activity: Build a bluebird box! Build the birds a home! Here are some video instructions for building a one-board birdhouse.
