Once a Seahawk ... A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP SEABURY ACADEMY 2022 SUMMER T his year, spring really is a rebirth of sorts; it's like coming out of hibernation. There has been a progressive sense of energy in the classrooms, hallways, and commons, bringing smiles to students and faculty at every corner. As we head into warmer weather, there is a strong sense of promise in the air, and not just for summer, but for possibilities of the future. Already approaching the summer months, it seems like this semester moved quickly! Our alumni will be happy to know that the students once again cleaned up at the Spring Fever Grudge Match in early March. The following week, I joined two other chaperones to take 28 students to Italy. It was a beautiful, sunny, and successful trip as well as a great start to spring. Headmaster's Holiday involved movies and bowling in Ottawa. We were overjoyed to return to form trips with destinations including Clinton Lake, Kansas City, Omaha, St. Louis, and Florida. Watching the students gather in front of the building throughout the day, smiling and eager to depart on their excursion, I was reminded why we go through so much effort to plan and execute these trips. We relished in a very entertaining and massively successful auction this year, and I am indebted to the auction chairman, Becca Diederich, the entire auction committee, and all of our attendees for supporting this event. The importance of this event stems not only from the material support for our students and teachers, but also the symbolic value of bringing together friends of Seabury to celebrate our school. I am grateful to everyone in the community who has rooted for us these last two years and helped us take the necessary steps to look after our students. Finally, as I write this text during Teacher Appreciation Week, we are blessed to have such committed, talented, and inventive educators working to improve the lives of our students. Thank you to all of them for their hard work and endurance this year—and once again, I will order them to take some serious time off this summer! Yours respectfully, Dr. Don Schawang Head of School Joy Is in the Air Yesterday's Tribulations and Today's Triumphs Are Tomorrow's Memories Cheers to 25 Years of Seabury… and to Many More! O n behalf of the students, faculty, and entire community of Bishop Seabury Academy, thank you to everyone who helped make this year's auction a success! This year's auction chairman, Becca Diederich, with the help of the entire auction committee, put on the first-ever Friday night auction in person and live streamed it at the Jayhawk Club on February 25, 2022. The Fund-a-Need goal was met and surpassed with the highest dollars ever raised—over $120,000! Those important funds will help build our culinary arts program, buy another defibrillator and medical supplies, and provide much-needed assistance and financial aid to families that wouldn't otherwise be able to attend Seabury. This auction was truly a celebration of 25 incredible years of our school's history with a sentimental video highlighting special moments since the beginning. We honored Betsy Alford for all her work and toasted our great faculty for all they do! Auction night included unique items, fun experiences, and beautiful art to make this night one to remember for the next 25 years!
