T22 WHATS UP! June 12 - 18, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert There's actually good news from eastern Europe because over the weekend, Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Con- test ... that is my favorite kind of, I want to say, folk-rap, EDM, flute-based Hobbit rock. It's a tough time for new par- ents right now because, na- tionwide, 40% of baby formula is out of stock. Luckily for par- ents, liquor stores: still fully stocked. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon It's been a rough couple months for the economy, and I saw that yesterday [May 18] was the worst day for the stock market in over two years ... experts say if this keeps up, every Merrill Lynch office is going to become a Spirit Hal- loween. A woman in Minnesota was arrested after she tried to flee from police and drove her car straight into wet concrete. ... She was cited for resisting ar- rest and going zero in a 60. The FDA just authorized the first at-home COVID test that can also detect other viruses, like the flu. That's amazing! Now you can be kind of un- sure if you have everything. The Late Late Show With James Corden Idaho, Kentucky, North Caroli- na, Oregon and Pennsylvania all held primaries today [May 17], which, of course, is news to the vast majority of people in Idaho, Kentucky, North Caroli- na, Oregon and Pennsylvania. The Guinness book of records has confirmed that Zeus the Great Dane is now the world's tallest dog. Zeus lives in Texas and stands over three feet, five inches. ... None of this im- presses me. I watched a film the other day about a dog that was way bigger than that — and it was red! The iconic noodle company Cup Noodles has introduced a limited-edition makeup col- lection inspired by the warm tones of ramen noodle soup. ... Some of us are autumns, some of us are summers and some of us are pork broths. A Rhode Island woman has been banned from Tinder for life after the company discov- ered she was using the app to recruit people for her kickball team. Tinder execs were like, "How dare you use our app to form meaningful social bonds with friends?!" Jimmy Kimmel Live! The Senate this afternoon [May 11] took a vote on wheth- er women should have the right to choose to have an abortion. The bill would have guaranteed pro-choice rights nationwide. It did not pass. It needed 60 votes [and] it only got 51. ... Chuck Schumer said he called for the vote so we would know where Republi- cans stand. Turns out, they're standing in the year 1865. Late Night With Seth Meyers Former president Trump re- cently announced he's writing a book called "The Crime of the Century" about the alleged voter fraud in the 2020 presi- dential election. Look for it in your bookstore's "Tantrum" section. According to a new poll, one in three Americans says that the coronavirus pandemic is over. Unfortunately, he's sit- ting between the other two. Archeologists in Laos recently discovered an ancient tooth, thought to have belonged to an extinct human species, that was lodged in a cave wall. Ex- perts believe their last words were, "Not ... cake." President Biden has reported- ly been telling aides in private that he no longer recognizes the Republican Party and views them as an existential threat to democracy. Oh, good — you're all caught up! This is like when you watch three epi- sodes of a show and you have to wait for your partner to watch them before you can move to Episode 4. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media Boarding 'Bupkis': Edie Fal- co has won four Emmys and two Golden Globes for portraying moms in "The Sopranos" and "Nurse Jackie," and she'll soon get the chance to play "Mom" in the upcoming Peacock series "Bupkis." "Bupkis" is a half-hour, live- action comedy that is being tout- ed as a "heightened," fictional- ized version of Pete Davidson's ("Saturday Night Live") life. This will be the comedian's first TV starring vehicle, and David- son is co-writing the series alongside his longtime friend/ collaborator Dave Sirus and Ju- dah Miller, both of whom worked on the comedian's 2020 film "The King of Staten Island." It's worth noting that "SNL" boss Lorne Michaels is one of the show's executive producers. Storylines are said to be root- ed in real life but with some ab- surd elements that reflect Da- vidson's persona and unfiltered brand of comedy. Falco, who also has a role in the upcoming "Avatar" (2009) film sequels, will play Davidson's on-screen mom. The future co-stars jointly announced the casting in person at the NBCUniversal Upfront presentation. "I'm so excited to be playing your mother in this show, Pete," said Falco, who went on to refer- ence her "Sopranos" role. "Final- ly, I get to play an overwhelmed mother of two living in a world of corruption — except this time, it's Staten Island." Her TV son made light of the constant media attention gener- ated by his work and high-pro- file relationships, most recently with socialite and businesswom- an Kim Kardashian: "I'm here so the media will finally start pay- ing attention to me," he dead- panned. When "Bupkis" was being shopped around back in March, Peacock beat out the competi- tion and quickly (by TV stan- dards) handed it a straight-to-se- ries order. As for its star/writer/produc- er, Davidson is one of four core "SNL" players — the other three being Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney — who announced their departure from the sketch comedy institution during its Season 47 finale. Da- vidson, who first hinted he was considering leaving the show back in 2020, had been on leave from "SNL" for much of this past season while filming the upcoming horror thriller "The Home." Leaving 'Riverdale': It's hard to believe Archie, Betty and Jughead are at least 80 years old — granted, it helps that the Ar- chie Comics characters were al- ready teenagers when they made their comic book debut in December 1941. That said, the print characters have enjoyed a much longer run than their live- action TV counterparts. CW recently embarked on an unprecedented cancellation spree, and many were shocked by the number of series that got the axe. Gone are "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" and "Batwoman," along with "Naomi," "Legacies," "4400," "Roswell, New Mexico," "In The Dark," "Charmed" and "Dynasty." And while "River- dale" was renewed for a seventh season, the focus will be on giv- ing the popular teen drama a proper ending, since there will be no Season 8. "I am a big believer of giving series that have had a long run an appropriate sendoff," CW chairman/CEO Mark Pedowitz explained during a media call. "We had a long conversation with Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa, series producer] yesterday and he is thrilled with the decision. We are going to treat the show in the manner it deserves. It's been an iconic pop culture star and we want to make sure that it goes out the right way." "Riverdale," which debuted in 2017, stars K.J. Apa ("Songbird," 2020) as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart ("Hustlers," 2019) as Betty Cooper, Cole Sprouse ("Five Feet Apart," 2019) as Jughead Jones and Camila Mendes ("Palm Springs," 2020) as Veronica Lodge. Wise men of Chelm: "Borat" (2006) star Sacha Baron Cohen is developing a new animated special inspired by Jewish folk- lore, and he's teaming up with "King of the Hill" creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels — as well as "Nathan for You" co-cre- ator Michael Koman — to bring the stories to life. Cohen will narrate "Chelm: The Smartest Place on Earth," a family-oriented animated spe- cial that is destined to land on HBO Max and Cartoon Net- work. If you've never heard of Chelm, know that it is both a real city in Poland and the most fa- mous imaginary place in Jewish folklore — a place inhabited by people who solve their problems in comically counterintuitive ways. According to HBO Max, the animated special will present "a fresh take on the silly antics and exaggerated conflicts of the town, while also preserving the essence and heart of the classic folktales." "This pitch was so hilarious, we just knew the HBO Max au- dience needed to get a dose of this original brand of storytell- ing," Amy Friedman, head of kids and family programming at Warner Bros., said. "'Chelm: The Smartest Place on Earth' is a perfect pairing of comedy and satire, and no one does that combination better than Sacha, Greg, Mike and Mi- chael. This unique project will breathe new, hysterical life into the nonsensical Chelmic wis- dom that originated from this imaginary city of folks who aren't quite the sharpest tools in the shed." Edie Falco to star in Pete Davidson comedy "Bupkis" STARS ON SCREEN
