Your donations really make a difference. In the past year, a frozen sprinkler system caused flooding and damage. Insurance will cover much of this, but the $5,000 deductible must be met. We also replaced hot water features, bought some new furniture, and funded several fall work party projects. Many more maintenance and repair projects will need funding in the coming years. (Example: the front porch!) We greatly rely on dedicated alumni to volunteer their time and to give to the Pinewoods Educational Foundation so that the whole community associated with the chapter house can survive, grow, and prosper. I can't overstate how much we appreciate the community members who have supported us. Our alumni network has over 900 members, and we hope to have many new contributors in 2022. The Pinewoods Educational Foundation owns the Pomeroy Chapter House and contracts out the property management to the Phi Epsilon Phi Corporation, which consists of elected volunteer alumni. Your donations, as well as proceeds generated from the operation of the Pomeroy chapter house, are used to maintain the property and further the mission of the Foundation, including scholarship funding for RPI students and leadership programs and events for the RPI community. In hoc, Tom Hamlin '83 tnlhamlin@comcast.net T hank you to all the brothers and friends of Delta Psi Chapter who contributed a total of $82,605 to the Pinewoods Educational Foundation. Nineteen recent graduates participated in the 1855 Campaign, and 39 donors contributed to the 2021 Year-End Campaign. The Building Our Bridge Capital Campaign consisted of donations pledged when the house was renovated and expanded. Lastly, one very generous alumnus (thanks, John Pfaff '71!) donated $50,000 to pay down the mortgage on the Pomeroy Chapter House. 2 BURST PIPE CAUSES BURST PIPE CAUSES BIG PROBLEMS BIG PROBLEMS I t was a freezing cold January night. Everyone in the Pomeroy Chapter House was fast asleep. Unbeknownst to anyone, something sinister was creeping through the bowels of the front vestibule. As the temperatures dropped, the supply line for the sprinkler head slowly began to freeze. Finally, it reached its breaking point, bursting entirely and soaking the floors! Sleepy-eyed students awoke to find extensive flooding in the hallway, the Alumni Room, and the basement. The fire alarm, ethernet, and Wi-Fi systems were all damaged by the icy water. The resilient undergraduates and the alumni team took action! A flood mitigation firm opened up the walls, cleaned it all up, and repaired the sprinkler system, leaving the wall where the pipe was located open to the heated room in the hopes of preventing further damage. A few weeks later, temperatures were still dropping. The chill once again crept through the plumbing, freezing the sprinkler head. Despite precautionary measures, it once again burst! More drastic measures were taken. The sprinkler lines have now been rerouted away from external walls, insulation has been added, and "dry" sprinkler heads are now in use. The fire alarm system is still down as we await parts, so battery-powered smoke detectors have been installed in all rooms. While this was an unexpected setback (twice), the actives did a fantastic job of quickly shutting off the water supply, sweeping the water out the front door and minimizing damage. Without their aid, it could have been much worse! In hoc, Satbir Nayar '85 satbirnayar@gmail.com MAINTENANCE BLOTTER November 2021-April 2022 A burst pipe caused several notable repairs, including: • Rerouted sprinkler system away from exterior wall. • Insulated the surrounding area. • Repaired the ethernet and Wi-Fi systems. • Replaced vinyl fascia on the third floor rear dormer. • Replaced ignition module for the convection oven in the kitchen. • Began installing a new security camera system with cloud-based storage.
