Fayetteville Technical Community College offers degree op- portunities in Information Technology PC Support & Services. We visit the emergency room when we are sick or injured. Computer support specialists are the emergency workers, doctors and nurses of the IT world. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer sup- port specialists earn a median annual salary of about $58,000. Employment is expected to grow 9% from 2020 to 2030 and about 70,000 openings are projected every year. Technology is becoming more advanced every day. Students starting a career in IT at FTCC will learn: •How to troubleshoot hardware and software •Different operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Windows Server) •Database Concepts •Networking and Security •Virtualization •Windows Administration •Programming •Project Management What you learn can lead to jobs such as: •Computer Network Support Spe- cialist ($62,760) •Desktop Support Analyst ($60,000) •Computer Support Specialist ($54,500) Computer Network Support Spe- cialists analyze, maintain and trouble- shoot computer networks by: •Testing and evaluating existing network systems •Performing regular network maintenance to ensure the network is operating as it should •Troubleshooting local area net- works, wide area networks and inter- net systems Desktop Support Analysts' duties include: •Testing and analyzing IT systems and software •Performing maintenance such as system installations and upgrades to avoid interruption •Providing recommendations to prevent future problems and optimize system performance Computer Support Specialists pro- vide technical assistance to computer users, troubleshooting technical is- sues with hardware and software by: •Analyzing computer problems, diagnosing and determining the cause of the problems •Documenting customers' descrip- tions of their computer problems •Guiding customers through problem-solving steps •Setting up and/or repairing com- puter equipment and other devices •Installing and training users to use various forms of hardware and software Michael Smith, an FTCC graduate, is currently working as an IT Operations Manager/Networking Consultant overseeing network infrastructure and system functionality and managing a team of technicians and other IT staff. Smith says his fascination with IT was due to the training he received in the technology courses he took as an FTCC student. "I chose FTCC because they offered more areas of study in technology than the other surrounding commu- nity colleges. e training I received prepared me with tools and skills that help me to adapt quickly to change."
