T22 WHATS UP! May 8 - 14, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tennessee has introduced a bill that would eliminate age re- quirements for marriage. ... If this bill goes into effect, Tennes- seans of any age could be com- mon-law married, which is extra wild considering that under cur- rent Tennessee law, it's already legal to get married as young as 17. OK, that's way too young to get married. It's also too young to vote, rent a car and too young to — and this is true — operate a deli slicer at a grocery store. Call me old-fashioned, but I say: "No matrimony till you slice balo- ney." Before you pay up and bring jus- tice to Dr. Fauci for crimes of do- ing science, on its website, in fairly small font, they [the ama- teur jury organizers] clarify that America's Grand Jury [to indict Dr. Fauci] is a mock jury ... "It has no legal authority." Anti-vaxxers love it, but it doesn't do any- thing? It's the hydroxychloro- quine of justice! The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Jet Blue is offering to buy Spirit Airlines for $3.6 million. Right now Spirit is like, "Guys, we bet- ter open a bank account. I think it's time." As bird flu continues to spread across the country, zoos are moving their birds inside to protect them from the virus. It's weird, right now all the birds are stuck inside making sour- dough and watching "Tiger King." Just in time for baseball season, Frito Lay is selling a new version of Cracker Jacks, called Cracker Jill. ... Yeah, so we can all stop worrying about gender equality, we did it! The Late Late Show With James Corden Tomorrow [April 6] an FDA ad- visory committee will be meet- ing to discuss the timing of fu- ture COVID boosters. ... We know more of them are coming, we just don't know when we're going to get them. Booster shots are basically like Avatar movies. Scientists now say a chemical compound found in broccoli and other leafy greens has been shown to slow the growth of COVID-19 as well as other com- mon-cold viruses. I cannot wait to take on the world armed with this new information that vege- tables are good for you! A dentist in Wisconsin has been convicted of intentionally break- ing his patients' teeth so he could get paid to fix them, and he made millions of dollars doing this. This would be like if your thera- pist started every session by say- ing that everybody hates you and you're a stupid little dork. Jimmy Kimmel Live! Somehow, Spirit Halloween has inspired a movie. Strike Back Studios and HideOut Pictures are teaming up to make a "Spirit Halloween" film. Two compan- ies thought this was a good idea! Maybe they figure if they go broke, they can turn their offices into Spirit Halloween stores. ... But what do I know? The most popular TV show on Netflix right now is called "Is it Cake?" Late Night With Seth Meyers According to a new survey, 16% of Americans live in the same city or town that they grew up in. The other 84% have them muted on Facebook. A restaurant in Florida reported- ly canceled a dinner reservation recently after discovering the gathering was a going away par- ty for a Capitol rioter who was sentenced to prison. Alright, but don't be shocked if they show up anyway! Authorities in Florida annou- nced yesterday that they arrest- ed six men who allegedly stole thousands of dollars of gasoline from several gas stations. They would have gotten away, but thousands of dollars of gasoline was still only like a quarter tank. Former president Trump yester- day [April 6] officially endorsed Georgia Congresswoman Mar- jorie Taylor Greene for re-elec- tion, and said she is "a warrior who doesn't back down and doesn't give up." Basically all the same reasons she's banned from Target. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media Diving into DC: From "The Italian Job" (2003) to "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) and last year's "F9: The Fast Saga," Charlize Theron's acting resume proves she's no stranger to action roles. The "Hancock" (2008) actress hasn't shied away from the su- perhero genre, either, having re- cently starred in and co-pro- duced Netflix's "The Old Guard" (2020). Theron's upcoming projects include "The Old Guard 2" and the sequel to the 2017 film "Atomic Blonde," but the actress is also teaming up with HBO Max to produce a new live-ac- tion TV series based on a DC Comics character. Envisioned as a one-hour dramedy, "You Brought Me the Ocean" is based on the young adult graphic novel of the same name by Alex Sanchez and Jul Maroh. It centers on Jackson "Jake" Hyde, a Black student who is navigating his sexuality alongside some less-than-nor- mal emerging superpowers. Jake, who lives in New Mexico and doesn't swim, suddenly yearns for the ocean, and his skin develops strange blue markings that glow whenever he comes into contact with water. According to Variety, the se- ries would serve as an Aqualad origin story, but its place within the DC Extended Universe is still unclear. While Aqualad made his big comic book debut in 1960, the Jake Hyde (aka Kaldur'ahm) ver- sion of Aqualad was created in 2010 for the animated series "Young Justice." HBO Max's "Ti- tans" featured the first iteration of that character, the Garth ver- sion of Aqualad (Drew Van Ack- er, "Pretty Little Liars"). All this means "You Brought Me the Ocean" would mark Jake's first appearance in a live-action ad- aptation. Theron is attached as execu- tive producer via her Denver & Delilah Films production com- pany, which landed a two-year first-look production deal with HBO and its streamer at the end of 2020. Sammy's story: It's been in the works for a while, but Lee Daniels' biography of Sammy Davis Jr. is now picking up steam. The "Empire" co-creator has teamed up with Hulu to tell the story of the iconic Rat Pack en- tertainer in an eight-episode limited series. The streamer has officially given it the green light, and Daniels is set to direct the first two episodes. The project has also found its lead. Elijah Kelley, who previ- ously worked with Daniels in "Star" and "The Butler" (2013), has been tapped to play Davis Jr. The series, tentatively titled "Sammy," is based on the book "In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr." by Wil Hay- good. It chronicles Davis Jr.'s ca- reer trajectory, from his begin- nings as a child performer on the vaudeville stage, to his days as a hard-partying member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack and subsequent (very public) scan- dals. According to Hulu, the limited series will look at Davis Jr.'s life through the lens of his racial identity and relationship with the Black community. As stated, the project has been in develop- ment since at least 2013, when it was first reported that Daniels was working on an HBO original film. (The switch to a miniseries format was reported in 2019.) In addition to his role as exec- utive producer and episodic di- rector, Daniels has teamed up with frequent collaborator Tom Westfall ("The United States vs. Billie Holiday," 2021) to write the series. Leading man Kelley will also be pulling double duty. An ac- complished dancer and singer (his musical credits include the 2007 hit film "Hairspray," NBC's 2015 film "The Wiz Live" and BET's "The New Edition Story," 2017), Kelley will also collabo- rate on some of the show's origi- nal music. In 'The Ledger': Xolo Mari- dueña, best known as Miguel Diaz, Johnny Lawrence's (Wil- liam Zabka, "The Karate Kid," 1984) karate pupil in Netflix's "Cobra Kai," should experience a rise in star power over the next few years. In addition to the Emmy-nom- inated "Cobra Kai," Maridueña has several projects in the works, including the high-action half-hour series "The Ledger," which was shopped to streamers and networks last fall. According to Variety, the project has now been set up for development at HBO Max, and Maridueña will star in the series and serve as one of its executive producers. "The Ledger" is the story of Gabriel (Maridueña), a pupil who sets out to right the wrongs of his teacher. After taking the man's ledger, Gabriel travels from town to town like an aveng- ing angel, trying to turn things around for anyone negatively impacted by the actions of his former mentor. Juan Carlos Coto, who is an executive producer on Fox's hit series "9-1-1" and a consulting producer on "9-1-1: Lone Star," has been tapped to write and ex- ecutive produce "The Ledger." That said, the project is still in the early stages of development, so you'll likely see Maridueña appear in Season 5 of "Cobra Kai" (filming already wrapped) or his upcoming DC superhero film, "Blue Beetle" (due to hit theatres in August 2023), before "The Ledger" makes it onto the small screen.
