lambda chi alpha SPRING 2022 EDITION ALPHA ETA NEWSLETTER oklahoma state university Reflections on the Past We Invite You to Share Your Memories alumni association alpha eta A ttempting to recall details from over 50 years ago can be very challenging, so I reached out to a couple of brothers from my late '60s era and found them to also be "challenged." Collectively, we recalled our monthly house bill to be in the $100 range. Tuition, over a five-year period, ranged from $7 to $14 a credit hour. A pitcher of Coors at the Coachman (and these were large pitchers) cost about $1. A haircut was 75 cents, and a pack of cigarettes cost 50 cents. I recall taking a date to the movies and then to the Coachman for a pitcher and maybe some fries—all for less than $5. Now, for those brothers who haven't had a child or grandchild in college in several decades, here's a few comparisons. The current Alpha Eta house bill is $4,500 per semester: $3,500 for room and $1,000 for meals. Tuition is currently $185.55 per credit hour for undergraduate state residents. That $5 date night that I enjoyed probably won't buy a large popcorn today. We all know about gasoline prices. Of course, this is all relative. In the late '60s, the minimum wage was $1.60 an hour (which was also the maximum for many of us), and my job offers following graduation were in the $7,000 a year range. My dad (AH275) graduated in 1941 and loved to talk about walking downtown with your date to the movies, and then splurging on a 10 cent cab ride back to campus. I'm sure that I will be corrected on several of my recollections, but I'm also hoping that we'll hear some great stories of the past from brothers of all ages. For many of us, our college experience was unique, and reliving some of those old memories is a lot of fun. Let us hear from you, and maybe we can include some of your memories in the next newsletter.
