54 | thejewelrybook.com Q: Paula, you are known for color. Would you share how color is so critical in your design vision? A: With jewelry, we have form and color, and color is fundamental. When I began my career as a professional artist I focused on painting and later I brought my skills in mixing color to gemstone selection. What is fascinating to me about gems is that many have optical e ects that I can play with. For example, some stones are "pleochroic," which means that they have di erent colors along di erent axes of the stone. Some are doubly refractive, which means that light entering the stone travels along two paths. is gives the gems added "sparkle." I like to mix gems to enhance and compliment these and other e ects. Q: What is your approach to creating your one-of-a-kind Endangered Species treasury? A: I have always found inspiration in nature, the ultimate teacher. I often make portraits of speci c plants and animals, and in doing research for a butter y I discovered that many species are endangered and some are extinct! I began an ongoing project of making what I call "Treasuries" of di erent species to make a record of their beauty, and to raise funds for their preservation. Some of the treasuries include big cats, wolves, sea life, and recently, American songbirds, some of which are not endangered. BAO is the Mandarin word for leopard, and it is the perfect name for this cute leopard cub with all the innocence and curiosity that all babies possess.
