Studying with brothers and working in roles like pledge trainer and recruitment chairman gave him strong leadership and organizational skills. Wednesday formal dinners, to which they invited professors and special guests like the late Senator Richard Lugar to discuss current events and issues, taught him etiquette and professionalism. What John values most, however, are the many friends he made in the Chapter House and the years since. John and his friend Brad Siok '94 were recruited by Doug Sokulski '92, a high school friend who told them about Beta Mu's strong academic standards and love of athletics. "Beta already had a strong reputation on campus, but Doug was the main brother who persuaded us to join," John said. "Living in the house was the best part of those undergraduate years," John explained. In those days, brothers were allowed to live there for three years, and living with 50 quality members was a big highlight. "ey were all guys you could count on and spend good times with." It was important to John to preserve those relationships and traditions, so he spent several years on the house corporation board with brothers like Aaron Hanlon '09 and Dan Breier '94. He met many great undergraduate brothers in his time on the board—even hiring one of them, Kevin Falsey '10, as a trading assistant when he graduated. Kevin worked at John's firm until 2018, when he sadly passed away from heart complications. When the late Cory Sanderson '94 was diagnosed with ALS, John and many era brothers came together in support. ey held golf tournaments and fundraisers to support Cory and his family as well as the Les Turner ALS Foundation. e brothers have remained close through the years, and group chats and Friday drinks over FaceTime helped them stay connected throughout the COVID struggles of 2020. "We've supported each other through the worst times and stayed connected in the best times," John said. "Beta's been good for that, and the friendships grow stronger even aer school." John began a hiatus from the board two years ago, but he keeps in touch with the members and makes a point to donate to the annual fund each year. "I don't have kids, but Beta is like an extended family." John and his wife live in Sugar Grove, Illinois, where he works as a bond trader. Fraternity connections have been a huge asset to his career, and he is proud to have seen many brothers thrive and find their own career success through the years. One such brother is Greg Ogle '94, who co- owns resorts across the country and has generously hosted alumni outings at a few of them. "It's been great to see friends be so successful over the years, and I think Beta has contributed to that a lot." If you'd like to catch up with John, he can be reached at john.tyrpin@yahoo.com.
