During the regular meeting of the Town of Quartzsite Common Coun- cil on April 12, 2022 the following proclamation was read by Mayor Norm Simpson. Arbor Day Proclamation by Norm Simpson, Mayor of the Town of Quartzsite, Arizona do hereby pro- claim Friday, April 29, 2022 as Ar- bor Day in the Town of Quartzsite and I urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations. In 1872, J. Sterling Morton pro- posed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Ar- Arbor Day is April 29 bor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heat- ing and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide hab- itat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giv- ing us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products. Trees in our town increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business ar- eas, and beautify our community. Trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal. Get involved with a local volunteer group or start your own project. Serve.gov offers ways to help your community. Benefits of volunteering Perhaps the first and biggest ben- efit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community and country. The intangible benefits alone— such as pride, satisfaction, and accomplishment—are worthwhile reasons to serve. In addition, when we share our time and talents we: • Solve Problems • Strengthen Communities • Improve Lives • Connect to Others • Transform Our Own Lives Benefit Your Health Over the past two decades we have also seen a growing body of re- search that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones. This re- search, which is presented by CNCS in a report titled "The Health Ben- efits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research," has established a strong relationship between volun- teering and health: those who vol- unteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer. Comparisons of the health benefits of volunteering for different age groups have also shown that older volunteers are the most likely to re- ceive greater benefits from volun- teering, whether because they are more likely to face higher incidence of illness or because volunteering provides them with physical and so- cial activity and a sense of purpose at a time when their social roles are changing. Some of these findings also indicate that volunteers who devote a "con- siderable" amount of time to volun- teer activities (about 100 hours per year) are most likely to exhibit posi- tive health outcomes. www.nationalservice.gov Get tested for COVID-19: If you have COVID-19 symptoms -At least 5 days after known or suspected close contact to COVID-19 -For screening (schools, workplaces, congregate settings, etc.) -Before and after travel -When asked by a healthcare professional or public health official -Attending an upcoming event or gathering? Reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by getting tested as close to the event date as possible. Self-tests are one of several options for testing for the virus that causes COVID-19 and may be more convenient than laboratory-based tests and point-of-care tests. If you have had COVID-19 in the past 90 days and recovered, you do not need to be tested unless you develop new symptoms. The Coronavirus Self-Checker is an interactive clinical assessment tool that can help you decide when to seek testing or medical care if you think you have COVID-19 or have come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19.
