2022 Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce Members & Visitors Guide Page 75 INFORMATION BY DANIEL SUTPHIN Sun Writer Of Florida's safest cities, Punta Gorda ranked No. 20 among the top 50 in the 6th Annual Safest Cities in Florida report created by Safewise. com, a company focusing on home security, automation and child safety products. Marco Island ranked No. 1 and the city of Venice ranked No. 17. Safewise bases its rankings on violent crime, property crime and mass shootings in correlation with the city's population, sourcing the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting and U.S. Census reports. North Port also made the top 50, ranking No. 33. Arcadia did not place on the rankings. Safewise calculates its ratings based on FBI crime statistics and United States Census population data, according to the Safewise methodology report. In the report, Safewise notes that the rankings are based on both violent crimes — aggravated assaults, murders, rapes and robberies — and property crimes — burglary, larceny and motor vehicle thefts. Safewise then calculates the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city, which "makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations," according to the report. Both violent and property crime numbers were weighted "equally," meaning for example, a city with no violent crimes reported could end up lower on the list due to a higher property crime rate.
