This historic small town with a population of about 20,000, is a hid- den treasure of Southwest Florida and lies as a "Fat Point," sticking out into Charlotte Harbor – one of the US's largest natural harbors. The city is the only incorporated community in Charlotte County. It reinvented itself after Hurricane Charley in 2004 but retained its Old Florida feel with its charming historic down- town that has restaurants, shops and galleries. Situated along the water where the Peace River meets the Charlotte Harbor, it attracts people to the Harborwalk as well as Fishermen's Village. The Charlotte Harbor & Events Center also has a variety of shows and events. As one of the oldest cities in Florida, Punta Gorda features a National Register Historic District. Be sure to visit History Park where historic buildings are preserved for future generations to enjoy. The Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society, an organization whose mission it is to preserve the rich history of the city through the beauty of mural art, has so far, completed 30 murals as its contribution to the Florida Mural Trail. The Punta Gorda also has approximately 18 miles of bicycle and pedestrian trails that connect the City's neighborhoods, parks, and commercial areas. In addition, Punta Gorda is a vibrant social and cultural center with events and festivals all year round. Greater Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands have been consistently voted the best place to live in the South. The area has a pristine water- front, untouched wilderness as well as attrac- tions and activities to keep you entertained. This tranquil coastal getaway is one of Florida's best keep secrets. Many are renting a place or buying a home to enjoy their own piece of paradise. Centrally located between Sarasota to the North and Fort Myers to the South, Punta Gorda is a comfortable driving distance from Tampa, Orlando and Miami. Charlotte County has new and expanding transportation networks, including Interstate 75 corridor connecting Charlotte County and Tampa to the north, and Miami to the east. Three-quarters of Florida's population can be reached within a 150-mile radius of Southwest Florida. So you can make Punta Gorda your homebase and travel quickly to other destina- tions across the state. SUN PHOTOS/TOM O'NEILL
