T8 WHATS UP! December 26, 2021 - January 1, 2022 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Lost Daughter" (2021) Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal ("The Dark Knight," 2008) steps into her big-screen writing and directing debut in impressive fashion with the critically ac- claimed drama film "The Lost Daughter," available to stream on Netflix beginning Friday, Dec. 31. The story follows Leda, played by Olivia Colman ("The Favourite," 2018), a middle-age divorcée who is devoted to her work and her two children. Away on a beach holiday in Italy, Leda is enjoying her break from life until a large and brash family arrives, complete with small children in tow. Their presence, completely impossible to ignore, forces Olivia to confront a set of demons from her own past and turns her peaceful getaway into a distressing confrontation of her own choices made as a young mother. Based on the book of the same name by Elena Ferrante, "The Lost Daughter" also stars Dakota Johnson ("Bad Times at the El Royale," 2018), Peter Sarsgaard ("Garden State," 2004), Jessie Buckley ("Fargo"), Paul Mescal ("Normal People") and Oliver Jackson-Cohen ("The Invisible Man," 2020). WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "The Book of Boba Fett"- Season 1 Coming soon to a galaxy not so far away is the brand-new origi- nal series "The Book of Boba Fett," premiering on Disney+ on Wednesday, Dec. 29. Whether one considers him a villain or an anti-hero, morally ambiguous and legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett has featured in Star Wars stories since his appear- ance in the original trilogy. Now, in a spinoff series of Disney and Lucasfilms' hit show "The Man- dalorian," audiences get the chance to dig even deeper into the character's story. Set within the timeline of "The Mandalori- an," the story follows Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison, "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," 2002) as he explores the underworld with mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen, "Mulan," 1998). As the pair re- turn to the sands of Tattooine, they attempt to stake their claim on the lands once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate in an attempt to make a name for themselves. The show is execu- tive produced by Robert Rodri- guez ("El Mariachi," 1992) and "The Mandalorian's" power- house production team of Jon Favreau, Colin Wilson, Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy. WHAT'S NEW ON HBO MAX "Harry Potter 20th Anniver- sary: Return to Hogwarts" Ring in the new year with the "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts" special, premiering Saturday, Jan. 1, on HBO Max. Franchise stars Dan- iel Radcliffe ("Miracle Work- ers"), Rupert Grint ("Snatch") and Emma Watson ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower," 2012) re- turn to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry once again with their co-stars and the crew to celebrate 20 years of magic since the film franchise's premiere with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," (or the "Philosopher's Stone," depend- ing on where you are in the world) in 2001. During this nos- talgic trip down memory lane, the cast engages in exclusive in- terviews and shares stories and behind-the-scenes footage. Made for those new to the wiz- arding world and Harry Potter's most dedicated longtime fans, "Return to Hogwarts" is a deep- dive into the magical franchise for one and all. Aside from Har- ry (Radcliffe), Ron (Grint) and Hermione's (Watson) return, fans are treated to appearances from stars Helena Bonham Cart- er ("Les Misérables," 2012), Rob- bie Coltrane ("Cracker"), Ralph Fiennes ("The Grand Budapest Hotel," 2014), Gary Oldman ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," 2011), Imelda Staunton ("Pride," 2014), Tom Felton ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes," 2011), James Phelps ("Cadia: The World Within," 2019), Oliver Phelps ("7 Days: The story of Blind Dave Heeley," 2019), Mark Williams ("Father Brown"), Bonnie Wright ("The Sea," 2013), Alfred Enoch ("How To Get Away With Murder"), Matthew Lewis ("All Creatures Great and Small") and Evanna Lynch ("Madness in the Method," 2019), and director Christopher Columbus ("The Help," 2011). WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Letterkenny" - Season 10 Pitter Patter, "Letterkenny" fans — Season 10 of the hit Canadian comedy series comes to Hulu on Sunday, Dec. 26. In for more fast-talking banter, outrageous- ly catchy slang and a whole host of often-hilarious small-town problems, the crew from the small fictional town of Letter- kenny, Ontario, is back once again. While the series follows multiple storylines, the main fo- cus of the show rests on stoic farmer Wayne (Jared Keeso, "Elysium," 2013) and his best friends, Daryl (Nathan Dales, "The Broken Hearts Gallery," 2020) and Dan (K. Trevor Wil- son, "Bigfoot"). At the begin- ning of each episode, an intro reads: "There are 5,000 people in Letterkenny. These are their problems." So, as the boys and their friends and family contin- ue to enjoy their rural lives in Letterkenny, there will certainly be plenty more parties, fights, relationships, hockey and, of course, beers along the way. Created and written by Keeso and co-star/director Jacob Tier- ney ("The Trotsky," 2009), the series also stars Michelle Myl- ett ("El Camino Christmas," 2017), Andrew Herr ("Goon: The Last of the Enforcers," 2017), Dylan Playfair ("The Mighty Ducks: Game Chang- ers"), Tyler Johnston ("Rabbit," 2018), Evan Stern ("RoboCop," 2014), Lisa Codrington ("Flat- liners," 2017), Kamilla Kowal ("The New Romantic," 2018), Dan Petronijevic ("Spiral," 2021), Mark Forward ("The Rocker," 2008), Kaniehtiio Horn ("The Trotsky," 2009), Clark Backo ("The Handmaid's Tale") and Melanie Scrofano ("Wynonna Earp").
