Out on the fi eld, the frogs have a few upcoming football games. When assistant coach Terry Crown was asked about how he thinks the season will go with the start of the new year he responded, "With the increase of students, I think we will have a big- ger turn out of athletes, and with the turnout of athletes you always have better athletes. I think this year is going to be a very exciting year with all of our speed." When asked about how practice is going, and how good do you think you guys will be, he then responded with, "I think with the speed we have and the players we have that have returned, I think we are going to be in our region one of the top 3 teams. He fi nished our conversa- tion by emphasizing the team over the individual. He said, "We are a team, what one guy does the other guy does when one guy fi lls in the other guy fi lls in." Main - Quartzsite (one block east of Family Dollar) Salome High School updates Salome High School started back up on August 2nd and we are all at- tending in person. All 147 students are feeling a lot better now that we are working to get back to normal. We're sticking to the one-to-one Chromebook program we started last year. That means each student has their own computer to do work on and stay caught up. As op- posed to last year's 4 periods, block schedule, this year, we've gone to seven, 50 minutes periods a day with a 30 minute TEAMS period to stay on top of things and work on personal projects. Mr. Pugliese told us, "It feels awesome." He is glad that we are back, he is getting used to the new schedule, students having Chromebooks feels easier to get information instead of having to go to the library. Ms. Slucas told us it feels good to be back, she feels like things are going back to nor- mal, she likes this schedule better, she is also glad kids have access to information. Junior, Bryanda, told us last year it felt like so many things were restricted, this year feels more open, it feels free, it's easier to carry things around when you only need to worry about a Chromebook. Sophomore, Nicho- las, said last year it felt hectic, books are heavy and they can be annoying at times, he is great with computers, and having a Chrome- book can be better not having to carry as much paperwork. With the new school year, we have some returning clubs and some new ones as well! Our Student Council plans on sending students to spirit conference next month where they'll be hosted by a large high school and learn lots of ways to build a great school community! The Letterman's club has big plans including getting a new scorer's table for the gym! FBLA is going to help Salome High School students prepare for their business careers after high school. We also have a new Culinary Club, the FCCLA, (Family Career Community Lead- Caroline Freedman. When asked about how the upcoming season will go, senior Elizabeth Huhtala responded, "I feel like if we keep working hard we will be ready for it." Sophomore Christina Cruz had input as well, "I'm excited for it, it'll be different because last year we had so many restrictions." We also talked to Mrs. Avila about the upcoming season. She told us, "I am excited to have so many return- ing players this year and that we are off to a great start. We also have a lot of new players; this is the most participation we have had starting a season in my 15 years coach- ing with a total of 32 girls on the team. Last season was shortened, so it will be great to play more games and play against some teams that we haven't seen in two years.¨ Terry Crown, Jason Chidester, Arlene Rumbaoa are the new teachers at Salome High School. Terry Crown is our new Building Trades teacher and is helping fi nish a house that the school is building. Jason Chidester is our new band teacher and is working with the freshmen to start a new march- ing band program. Arlene Rum- baoa is the new special education director and helps students that have an IEP. The three new teachers Mr. Crown, Mr. Chidister, and Ms. Rumboan were asked several questions about how they feel about being new teachers, the students and staff, and the schedule. Mr. Crown's response was, "Exler- ating, I know a lot of the students already, I like teaching them prac- tical things in life. The 8-period schedule, at fi rst it was tiring, but now it feels good, I enjoy it. I enjoy teaching kids how to fi nish the house, it feels good to pass down the information I learned when I was younger." Ms. Rumbaoa's com- ment was, "I am grateful to be able to help kids with special needs. The Unity of the teachers is making it a lot better. You are fl exible with this type of schedule." Mr. Chidester also had a few words to say, "Outstanding as long as stu- dents pay attention. The marching band it's exciting, busy but coming along slowly. We are planning a show for homecoming" • Birth • Obituary • Anniversary Place it FREE in the: Desert Messenger! 928-916-4235 Got something to share?
