Dodgers you can see why.'' And yet Williams, the defending champion at the All England Club, and Patrick Mouratoglou, the French coach who's been helping her during the current 75-3 stretch that dates to the start of Wimbledon last year, both gave this assessment: There are areas of her game that could use some finetuning. ''After today, there's so many ways that I can improve,'' the No. 1-ranked and No. 1seeded Williams said, ''and that I'm going to need to improve if I want to be in the second week of this tournament.'' Really? How about some examples? ''Come on,'' Williams replied, tilting her head and smiling. Here was Mouratoglou's take after watching Williams win her first 17 service points and compile a 25-5 edge in total winners on Centre Court: ''I mean, of course, not everything is perfect yet. It's interesting to see what we need to work on for the (coming) days.'' They also agreed that she did not have too hard a time setting aside the events of the previous seven days, which included a lot of saying ''I'm sorry'' — face-to-face with Sharapova, at a news conference, in two separate statements posted on the web — over things Williams was quoted as saying in a Rolling Stone story. Better than anyone in the world right now, really. Extending her winning streak to 32 matches, the longest single-season run on the women's tour since 2000, Williams began her bid for a sixth Wimbledon championship and 17th Grand Slam title overall with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over 92nd-ranked Mandy Minella of Luxembourg on Tuesday. ''You can call her pretty much unbeatable,'' Minella said. ''She's playing better than ever. ... The team announced the addition of Brendan Malone to the coaching staff on Tuesday. Mike Malone had said when he was hired that he planned to hire his father. The Malones are the second father-son duo to hold the title of NBA head coach, joining Bill and Eric Musselman. The Malones also worked on the same staff as assistants for the New York Knicks in 2003-04. Brendan Malone has 27 years of NBA experience, including a stint as an assistant to Chuck Daly on two championship teams in Detroit. Malone was also the first head coach of the Toronto Raptors. The Kings also have extended a qualifying offer to guard Tyreke Evans, making him a restricted free agent. Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro announced the move Tuesday that allows the team to match any contract offer Evans receives from another team. Evans averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 65 games last season. Evans was drafted fourth overall out of Memphis in 2009 and won the NBA Rookie of the Year that season. He is averaging 17.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 257 games over four seasons with the Kings. NBA Clippers finalize coaching deal for Doc Rivers LOS ANGELES (AP) — After weeks of negotiations and intrigue, Doc Rivers has officially left the Boston Celtics for the Los Angeles Clippers. Rivers will be introduced as the Clippers' new coach and senior vice president of basketball operations at a news conference Wednesday at their Playa Vista training complex, capping a lengthy process by completing a rare trade involving a championship-winning coach. The Clippers and Celtics finalized the move Tuesday when the NBA approved the deal. Boston will get an unprotected firstround pick in 2015 from the Clippers for Rivers, who went 416305 and won the 2008 NBA title during nine seasons with the Celtics. Boston's front office mostly had warm words for Rivers after he took off for his exciting new team on the West Coast, apparently not eager to stick around for the aging Celtics' rebuilding process. ''We don't have a championship without Doc Rivers coaching,'' said Danny Ainge, the Celtics' president of basketball operations. ''He did an unbelievable job. He has a long history of great success with us in the last nine years, and we wish him the best in Los Angeles.'' Rivers is likely to be the NBA's highest-paid coach with the deal, and he'll also have a prominent role in the Clippers' front office with his additional title. Clippers owner Donald Sterling will expect impressive results for such an investment, but his long-suffering franchise has never been in better shape on the court — providing Los Angeles re-signs Chris Paul, who is eligible for a five-year contract worth nearly $108 million in See RIVERS, page 2B
