2A Daily News – Wednesday, June 26, 2013 Community people&events Free Electronic Waste Collection Event The Tehama County Sanitary Landfill Agency will conduct a Free Electronic Waste Collection Event from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 29, at the following locations: • Red Bluff - Tehama County Department of Social Services at 310 South Main St. • Corning - Park and Ride Commuter Parking Lot, northeast corner of Third and Solano Streets Televisions, computer monitors and equipment, microwaves, DVD/VCR players, cell phones, and other small electronic waste (e-waste) will be accepted free of charge during the event. There is no quantity limit on e-waste accepted. Don't miss this great opportunity to safely dispose of your old electronics! E-waste is of concern largely due to toxicity (lead, mercury and cadmium) of some of the substances if processed improperly. E-waste collected will be recycled. Recycling such items saves landfill space and protects our environment. Tailgate Food Giveaway A Tailgate Food Giveaway is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Friday, June 28 at the Tehama District Fairground, 650 Antelope Blvd. Clients do not need to pre-register. Volunteers will be setting up at 8 a.m. Food will be dispersed until noon. Community Action Agency along with Butte County Community Action/North State Food Bank are hosting a Tehama County Tailgate Food Giveaway. These events typically have fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, assorted non-perishables and other food items. The food given to participants comes from surplus farm produce and other surplus sources. Recipients must be income eligible. CAA programs serve up to 185 percent poverty, but income is selfdeclared. There is a short demographic form and a sign in sheet required to receive a food box. People do not have to provide their names to qualify. Vineyard hosts auction and dinner The Red Bluff Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 738 Walnut St., will be hosting an Ecuadorian dinner and silent auction 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 14. The dinner will feature a four-course meal with examples of traditional Ecuadorian fare and favorite dishes brought back by past mission team members. This event grows in popularity each year and this year looks to be the best ever. The silent auction is competitive and fun and will feature a wide variety of items to bid on. From Disneyland tickets to hand-crafted items from local artisans and everything in between, there will be something to interest everyone. Also included in the event is the widely popular raffle $500 in gas or groceries. Tickets for the raffle are $5 each, or 5 for $20. The bulk of this years trip will be focused on work with Verbo Ministries in Cuenca, Ecuador. The team will have the opportunity to minister to neighborhood children through Vacation Bible School, do home medical visits, and other building and maintenance projects on the La Esparanza Children's Home. Diner tickets are $15 for adults; $8 for children ages 5-12; and children younger than 5 eat free. Seating is limited. Each team member pays for their own travel expenses, therefore proceeds from this event go directly to fund work projects while in Ecuador July 26 through Aug. 4. Discovery Center offers summer camps The Sacramento River Discovery Center is offering six to twelve year olds an opportunity to attend Summer Day Camps. The week of July 1 to 5 will feature the PG&E sponsored camp titled Good Fire-Bad Fire. The recent fire in the East Sand Slough will provide attendees with a close up view of the damage caused by children play- ing with fire. Campers will explore what things might be learned and will learn what can be done to protect our forests and property. Can positive outcomes result from a negative event? Campers will have an opportunity to explore what is a good fire and what is a bad fire. Morton Kaer To Be One Of The Attractions On Fourth Of July Red Bluff people will be singularly favored at the American Legion's Fourth of July Celebration at Joyland, by appearance of Morton Kaer, better known as "Bones" who will give exhibitions of his skill and prowess during the afternoon of that date. Kaer is the justly famous local high school athlete. — June 26, 1923 build a diorama of fire helping wildlife habitat, and learn more about the life of a firefighter. The week of July 8 to 12 will feature the exploration of Natural Resources in Space! Attendees will have an opportunity to construct a model Mars/Moon colony, run a simulated landing on an asteroid, explore who may soon be moving out into the solar system and learn about possible careers as an asteroid miner or how to drive a robotic rover. Imagine going where no man has gone before and having a career that does not even exist now. There is much to explore in space!. Camps are held at the Discovery Center, 1000 Sale Lane from 8 a.m. to noon, each day from Monday through Friday. The cost is $50 per camper per week. Water, juice, supplies and snacks are provided for each camper. Activities take place in the Mendocino National Forest's 488 acre Red Bluff Recreation Area.
