WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM JULY 28 - AUGUST 3, 2021 UCW 19 WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication For the Birds A nature camera disguised as a piece of bark in the Nizhne- Svirsky Nature Reserve in Russia fell victim to a persistent woodpecker, United Press International reported. A black woodpecker named Zhelna, looking for insects, pecked at the camera for several days until it broke, reserve workers posted on Facebook. The device has been removed for repairs. Oh, Canada Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, had a mystery on their hands when a load of fenceposts went missing, RCMP reported on its website. Officers opened an investigation, but the "bucktooth bandits" were quickly identified: "The stolen goods were located in a beaver dam," said Constable Conrad Rickards. "A beaver — or beavers — helped themselves to the stash of posts and used them to help build a dam. I tried locating said beavers but they were GOA (gone on arrival)." Ewwww The Wellington Correctional Center in New South Wales, Australia, is being evacuated so that crews can clear the prison of dead and decaying mice and repair chewed electrical wiring, the Associated Press reported. Australia has been overrun with mice for months, which scien- tists say happens when rain fol- lows several years of drought. Corrective Services Commis- sioner Peter Severin explained that "the mice have got into wall cavities, into roof spaces. They're dead, but then they start obviously decaying and then the next problem is mites." Crime Report As Paul Kiyan let himself into the home of Mat and Monica Sabz in Bel Air, California, Monica watched on Ring video and alerted her husband, who was at home. Kiyan was naked, KTLA-TV reported, and helped himself to a shower and a pair of shorts. When Mat confronted him, Kiyan said the house was his. While he was there, Kiyan killed the couple's two pet birds with his hands; police arrested him on several felony charges. Question: Will some forward-think- ing Hollywood executive reboot the George Peppard vehicle "Banacek?" — Steve O Matt Roush: Would a reboot of a 1970s private-eye series really be forward-thinking? I loved the ran- domness of this suggestion, because there were so many higher-profile spokes of NBC's "Mystery Movie" wheel: "McCloud," "McMillan and Wife" and of course "Columbo." Se- riously, though, because "Banacek" is lesser known, reviving a show and a hero that had a sense of humor about itself wouldn't be the worst idea. In the bigger picture, I'd like to see a network try the "mystery wheel" format again, rotating its series on a weekly or monthly basis. Something like that could air year- round with fewer episodes per se- ries, and that might be refreshing. To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com. By Damian Holbrook Cheers to to Zooey Deschanel for getting into the game — "e Celebrity Dating Game." Just as charming as she was for seven sea- sons on Fox's "New Girl," Deschanel is bringing her inimitable appeal to ABC's update of the classic, and we're more smitten with the host than the single stars are with their potential paramours. Cheers to "Fear the Walking Dead" for blowing our minds. Never in a million years would we have imagined the show would take the nuclear option, but that's just what the gutsy sixth-season finale did as hero Morgan (Lennie James) and his fellow survivors failed to stop a doomsday cult from detonating multiple warheads. Bring on the ra- diated mutant zombies. Jeers to "Lisey's Story" for cutting too close to the bone. Any way you slice it, the Apple TV+ take on Ste- phen King's novel about a widow (Julianne Moore) uncovering the traumatic past of her late author hubby (Clive Owen) has been a harrowing ride — one that drove us over the edge with that grisly attack by a maniac with a pizza cutter.
