KANSAS SIG page 3 Ben Runkle Cup Golf Tournament Supports Charity, Brings Alumni and Actives Together T he 2020-21 Alpha Xi Chapter of Sigma Chi inaugural Ben Runkle Cup golf tournament was a spectacular, record-breaking event that raised more than $13,000 for education funds and cancer research. With more than 100 participants and the help of many Significant Sigs and alumni, it was a successful debut that will only grow as time moves forward. The biggest obstacle and blockade in setting up the tournament was of course the COVID-19 pandemic, which unfortunately limited attendance and space for golfers and the staff. Sean Dugan '86, Sarah Netherland, and the Runkle Cup alumni board were huge factors in getting the Runkle Cup going. They were able to find a golf course in Basehor, Kansas, that accommodated all participants. Along with a full day of four-person, shotgun style golfing, raffles, putt/driving competitions, and silent auctions were available to those who attended with the goal of raising money for charitable organizations. My job specifically was to act as a liaison between alumni and active (in-house) members and supply information to participants, as well as inform alumni on the recent updates going on within Alpha Xi Chapter. All in all, it was a fantastic event that I am eager to see grow in participation numbers. Fraternally, Isaac Williams '22 Public Relations Chairman Philanthropy Remains Top Priority During Challenging Times E ven with multiple COVID-19 restrictions, the brothers of Alpha Xi still logged hundreds of hours of community service, including helping Harvester's Food Network, Habitat for Humanity, and selling cookies and ice cream to raise money for Folds of Honor. The chapter also held a Grill-Out philanthropic event in collaboration with Kappa Kappa Gamma, which benefitted the Huntsman Cancer Foundation and Folds of Honor. Derby Days inspired more events such as a Chipotle fundraiser, which raised more money and awareness about Derby Days and its supporting foundations. Fraternally, Aidan Hurley '23 Philanthropy Chairman AlphA Xi SupportS NAtioNAl ChAritieS through ANNuAl Derby DAyS eveNt At Ku D erby Days is one of the best weeks of the year at Sigma Chi. Not only is it the largest philanthropic event among the Greek community, but it also serves as a great opportunity to help two important beneficiaries. The first of these is Sigma Chi's national charity partner, The Huntsman Cancer Foundation. They, in partnership with the national fraternity, have just pledged more than $100,000,000 to go toward one of the best and newest women's cancer research facilities in the world. Our second partnership is with Folds of Honor, which is an organization that helps to fund scholarships for the children and spouses of fallen and disabled military service members. During our last Derby Days in 2019, our chapter alone raised more than $42,000, and we only hope to go up from there. This year, we worked diligently to make up for the lapse in donations over the last year due to the complications and adversities we have been facing with the outbreak of COVID-19. The entire membership of the chapter contributed in some way, and that collective effort made things much easier in terms of navigating obstacles regarding state, local, and university protocols and mandates. We have ambitious fundraising goals, but strongly believe that they will be met and surpassed, thanks to the widespread effort and volunteering of each member of our chapter.
