Once a Seahawk ... A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP SEABURY ACADEMY 2021 SUMMER New Perspective and Hope to Seabury Students and Staff Look Forward to a Fall of Normalcy A healthy school culture is the equivalent of a box full of puppies, and that is how students like it—pressed together, energetic (and lethargic in turn), and full of enthusiasm that can border on joy or chaos. That kind of animal proximity day after day can be a bit overwhelming, yet most teachers see that messy world of childhood and adolescence as a second home. Then the pandemic happens. Last fall, I worried that enforcing our safety protocol with the students would be as tricky as…well, separating puppies in a box. However, our students knew the stakes and they dutifully accepted the very strange world of masks, distancing, disinfecting, and the suspension of the typical rhythms of school life. We required our children to have strength, patience, and understanding beyond their years and they proved that they were equal to the task. Spring always brings new perspective and hope. We see the fruits of our new landscaping as trees and flowers come to life around our building. The new pond, garden, and chicken coop are coming to fruition. Thanks to our expanded commons, students and teachers came together in the same room every day for morning meeting—and that is powerful. As the faculty and older students finish their vaccinations, we are on the precipice of a new beginning. Thank you to our parents for helping us make this year a success, including their help with BSAP events. Our community also stepped up and helped us surpass our annual fund and auction goals this year. Our teachers and staff were constantly reinventing their classrooms and developing new ways to get past the masks. Soon, the masks will finally come off, our chairs will be closer together, and our students and staff will once again enjoy the unselfconscious easiness of fellowship that is integral to our school. Despite the challenges we have endured, the resilience we have developed in the face of isolation, anxiety, and loss will finally make us stronger people who are more intentional and grateful than we could have been otherwise. Yours respectfully, Dr. Don Schawang Head of School T hank you to the entire Seabury community for their generous support for this year's auction, Cabin Fever, on February 20! We knocked our Fund-A-Need goal out of the park with a total of $100,970! These dollars will enhance our outdoor spaces with new flexible and sturdy furniture, rebuild our garden and chicken coop, and support the work of our students by providing Chromebooks to multiple grade levels. The auction was truly one to remember with donations including a TrailManor camper, one-tank-trip getaway experiences, beautiful art, and delicious charcuterie boards. We are so grateful to our auction co-chairs, Teresa Hanna and Theresa Klimiuk, the auction committee, sponsors, parents, juniors, and staff that helped make it such a success for our school!
