Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Chi at The University of Texas H Spring 2021 Founded in 1884 We Shall Serve as Sigma Chi Bridge Builders The Time Is Now to Give to Alpha Nu's Capital Campaign A t Alpha Nu, the past few weeks have brought much more than April showers and May flowers. I'm thrilled to share that construction on our Chapter House has remained on schedule and is expected to be done this summer! There are so many people to thank for helping Alpha Nu get to this point, especially the loyal 182 brothers and friends of Alpha Nu who have generously contributed more than $2.72 million to the Alpha Nu… A Tradition to Build Upon capital campaign. Their gifts illustrate their dedication to Sigma Chi's mission, as they want to develop values-based leaders at Alpha Nu who are committed to the betterment of character, campus, and community. Our Chapter House will provide the men of Alpha Nu an environment where they can succeed academically, philanthropically, and socially. However, we can't be content, as there is much more work to be done. It is critical for us to reach our $3 million goal so that Alpha Nu remains financially strong and to ensure that Sigma Chi is second to none among Texas fraternities. All you need to do is drive around campus to see that Sigma Chi is far from the only UT fraternity that has built, is building, or is preparing to build a new facility. Brother Linden Welsch '69 accurately summed up the importance of supporting future generations of Alpha Nu in a recent conversation I had with him: "I have been working with the Chapter for over 30 years, and my reason is that these young men will be the future leaders of our country and communities. They will set the standard and ideals by which our American institutions, values, and society are governed and shaped," Linden said. "There are a lot of worthy causes to support and most deal with disadvantaged and needy groups and people in our society. However, the people who support and work with these groups are the successful and motivated segment of our country who want to give something back. I am supporting these men when they are starting out on their life's journey, and hope I can make a small difference at an important time in their college experience." Linden also shared a poem with me by Will Allen Dromgoole, "The Bridge Builder," that couldn't be more fitting for all Alpha Nu brothers. As we all know, so much can be accomplished from the Sigma Chi experience. We must build this bridge (Chapter House) for the young men who are following in our footsteps. In Hoc Signo Vinces, Lucian Morehead '94 Campaign Chairman (512) 825-6287 | lmorehead@asterra.com The Bridge Builder By: Will Allen Dromgoole An old man going a lone highway, Came, at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide. Through which was flowing a sullen tide The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. "Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way; You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build this bridge at evening tide?" The builder lifted his old gray head; "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followed after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!" Sitting Down with Significant Sig and Campaign Donor Jack Guenther '56 What motivated you to join Sigma Chi, and what does the brotherhood mean to you? Brotherhood to me means a group of guys "who have your back." What are some of your favorite Sigma Chi memories? There are too many to single out one as my favorite. Looking back, my college years, which included Sigma Chi, were some of the best years of my life. How did your Alpha Nu Chapter experience shape you as a person? My Chapter experience helped shape my character, ability to get along with others, and the reward of serving others. What inspired you to support Alpha Nu's capital campaign? A new Chapter House was long overdue. The Texas A&M chapter broke ground on their new chapter house in 2017 with "tremendous alumni support." (Continued on page 3)
