Spring 2021 PHI SIGMA KAPPA FRATERNITY AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY Phi Sig Express Greetings, Phi Sig Purdue Brothers! DELTA TRITON MENTORSHIP PROGRAM The board approved a mentorship program to support our undergraduate Delta Triton membership. The intent is to pair the life experience and strengths of alumni with active members who seek academic advice, assistance with house leadership questions, and career opportunities. Recent Greek experience across the Purdue campus has shown that some of the most effective mentors for undergraduates are those well-connected by social media who are willing to offer advice and counsel. Being close to campus and frequent chapter visits are not requirements to be a successful mentor. Some mentors limit interaction to specific subjects, such as course choices, or to a limited number of undergraduates per year while others are open to larger groups and multiple topics. There is no one-size-fits-all template for success. What matters are timely conversation and an exchange of ideas. Examples of mentorship opportunities include: • Course work choices within a program of study • Career path interests and appropriate course work to meet that goal • Government versus private career opportunities • Graduate school timing and focus • Planning for employment interviews and resume review • Networking for job opportunities and referrals • Assisting a brother with a geographic move to a new location • Review of academic papers and projects • Advising chapter officers in the execution of their duties Nine alumni have agreed to be part of this initial group of mentors, and there is always room for more. Our goal is to have this fully up and running for the fall 2021 semester. The alumni relations chairman, Ethan Devereaux '22, can be reached at pskdtalumnirelations@ gmail.com and will coordinate chapter requests for assistance. We ask mentors for a one-year commitment. If you have any questions or are interested in becoming a chapter mentor, please contact me at jlendrum@nciprecast.com to get started. PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS Wow! What a year it has been for Delta Triton with COVID-19 being the driver for everything academic and fraternity related. I'm extremely proud of our undergraduates and how they have persevered through some tough times in rapidly changing social circumstances. It has not been without some positive tests, quarantine time for the chapter, and daily restrictions to fraternity life that reduce the fun. All considered, the chapter is in great shape with two good pledge classes, contracts signed for near full occupancy in the fall, and the property in good shape. ALUMNI KEY TO DELTA TRITON'S SUCCESS As we finish this academic year, our board has worked hard to support the chapter and maintain our investment in the house with monthly board meetings. Thanks to Treasurer Juan Fraiz '79, for his efforts in managing cash and securing a new mortgage at lower interest rates. Vice President Kevin Chase '01, Gregg Walbridge '81 and Austin Tummers '18 provided expert alumni leadership for the chapter's COVID-19 response, with a working group of undergraduates that met requirements of the Protect Purdue guidance. I am convinced the joint effort of alumni and chapter members made Delta Triton better prepared than many fraternities on campus. GRATEFUL FOR GENEROSITY OF BROTHERS Finally, thank you to the brothers who participated in our October annual meeting via Zoom.
