House Corporation Dedicated to Keeping Lambda Chapter House in Pristine Shape Lambda Log Chi Omega at the University of Kansas Spring 2021 D espite the challenges we all are facing, we have settled into this new normal for the time being, and we were thrilled to welcome our Lambda women back on campus this semester after an extended winter break. We can all hope that with the better weather, dropping rates of COVID-19 spread, and arrival of vaccines, better times are on the horizon. In our last issue of the Lambda Log, we proudly featured our outstanding Chef Robert Lake and House Director Colleen Kowich, Mu Zeta '89. I want to sing their praises again for all they continue to do to support our Lambda women. Their daily dedication is instrumental to the well-being of our members, and for that we are ever grateful. As you might recall, we had planned for several years for an extensive renovation of the bedrooms on both the second and third floors last summer. With so many unknowns last spring, our House Corporation Board decided to delay this project. I am happy to report that final planning is underway to begin this project in late May after the girls move out for the summer. While this is an extensive project that will include new bunk beds, furnishings, new lighting, and new heating and a/c units, we anticipate a completion date of August 1, in time for member move-in and recruitment! These projects are always a priority to the House Corporation, to preserve and maintain our beautiful Chapter House. On behalf of our entire board, I thank all our alumnae for your continued loyal support of Lambda Chapter. Together, this family has enriched the lives of so many Chi Omegas for more than 100 years. It all started with Dottie's grandfather, Elmer F. Engel, who graduated from KU in 1892. He stayed at KU, teaching German for more than 40 years and before serving as registrar. Engel Road—a prominent road just west of the campus—is named for him. In 1912, Elmer's elder daughter, Agnes Engel '12, was initiated into Chi Omega; Lambda Chapter was only a 7-year- old chapter at that time. In 1918, Dottie's mother, Dorothea Engel Thomas '18, was also initiated into Lambda Chapter (Continued on page 2) - @kansaschiomega kansaschiomega.com University of Kansas Chi Omega - Lambda Chapter Chi Omega - Lambda Chapter Alumnae Contact Jan Seymour Jenkins '72 at creativityshop@aol.com for an invitation to the group. i f Remembering Dorothea Thomas Dickey '45— Sister Extraordinaire By Jennifer Inskeep Godar '92, Lambda Owl Foundation, President I t is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Dorothea "Dottie" Thomas Dickey '45 passing on to the Omega Chapter on December 8, 2020. Dottie was kind, witty, funny, and incredibly generous to anyone who crossed her path. For those who did not know Dottie personally, I thought I would share a bit about her. Five years ago, I learned of the Chi Omega Lifetime Service Award that would be awarded that summer at the 2016 Chi Omega Convention. After reading the criteria, it was clear we should nominate both Dottie and her sister, Betsy Thomas Shafer '49. Below is the application submitted as the nomination for Dottie to tell her story the best I could:
