Make eating fruits and
vegetables fun by turning
your plate…into a canvas!
What you'll need:
• A variety of fruits and vegetables cut
into various size pieces
• 2 or more plates
• Toothpicks (optional)
• Dips such as ranch or yogurt (optional)
In addition to color, fruits and
vegetables also offer a variety of
shapes, sizes and textures – the
perfect tools for creating edible
works of art.
Begin by collecting a variety of
fruits and vegetables. Wash and dry
your produce and then have your
adult help you cut into bit-sized
pieces and place in a bowl or on
a plate. You can use small cookie
cutters in the shapes of circles, stars, etc.
or even a melon baller.
Use a second plate as your workspace
and then start creating your 3-D picture
or mini sculpture masterpiece using
the fruits and vegetables provided and
toothpicks.
Compliment your art work with dip or
dressing.
If you need some inspiration, check out
books by Saxton Freymann and Joost
Elffers, including "Fast Food," "Food
Play," "Dog Food," and more, featuring
amazing fruit and vegetable creations.
Or ask your adult to help you look up
Saxton Freymann food art online, on
Pinterest.
Once you're done, take a photo
of your creations. Once you have a
collection of photos, you may even want
to write a book of your own starring
your fruit and veggie art.
Take one last look to enjoy the beauty
of your art and then start eating your
delicious fruits and veggies!

Fruits and vegetables come in a wide
variety of colors. Eating a Rainbow
is not only fun, but it also provides a
health boost since the pigments in the
fruits and vegetables responsible for
the color also mean there are lots of
nutrients in them!
