By randy rice McDonald County Directory When a decision to move to a new area is being contemplated, several factors come into consideration. For most, if not all, young families, the quality of the schools is right at the top of the list. And in McDonald County, there is much to be said about what the school district has to offer—and all of it is good. "I think we are the best school district in Missouri for several reasons," began Angie Brewer, McDonald County High School Principal and Director of Secondary Curriculum. "e number one reason is academics. We were recently named in the top 50 high schools in the state. We are one of only three in SW Missouri who are in the top 50." "We have a cutting edge Ag department which uses 21st Century tools such as a plasma cutter to show kids all the possibilities in the world of Ag and Agribusiness," she continued. "We also have an awesome Computer Science and Engineering department that offers classes like cybersecurity and drone coding. Our eater and Performing Arts Departments put on first rate performances with typical casts of over 200 students." But Principal Brewer believes the quality education provided by the McDonald County School District goes beyond academics. "Our school is a family," she said. "We stress relationships and teaching the whole child. We offer counseling with a licensed therapist on site during the school day which is very rare in public schools. We love our students like our own children and go to bat for them 100%." It would be difficult to find an individual more suited to head McDonald County High School than Angie Brewer. She is a native with deep roots in the area. "I am proud to be a class of 1992 McDonald County High School graduate, married to a McDonald County High School graduate, and the daughter of two retired McDonald County teachers," she said. "My own kids attend the high school and I am proud to call McDonald County my home." And that pride shows when asked about the area she has called home her entire life. "is is a great place to live, work and play," she said. "You have great trails, creeks, and outdoor venues right in your backyard but are also two and a half hours from Kansas City and also have Northwest Arkansas to shop and dine out. We have great local merchants who cater to the local small business trade. Our local shops and eateries are wonderful." Moving forward, the high school does not plan on coasting on current successes. "We are expanding our partnership with Project Lead the Way, a leader in STEAM education, to offer Biomedical Science courses next year," Angie noted. "We also have just opened a brand new and very modern weight room facility in the high school and are in the midst of remodeling our Drama Dept to create a Black Box, Little eater for the community to enjoy." Principal Brewer sees her high school as the best of both worlds. "You have the small school atmosphere but with the big school course offerings," she said. "In our high school everyone finds their niche." As the region continues to grow, McDonald County School District is keeping a step ahead finding new creative ways to serve their students and all the while, as their school mission states, helping every child, every day… whatever it takes.
