READER'S OASIS BOOKS 690 E. Main - Quartzsite (one block east of Family Dollar) Ginger (Zingiber offi cinale) is sur- prisingly the most widely used di- etary condiment in the world today. It's actually part of the plant fam- ily that includes turmeric & carda- mom, which may explain why the health benefi ts of ginger are so ex- traordinary. The Chinese and Indians have used ginger tonics to treat ailments for over 4,700 years and it was a price- less commodity during the roman Empire trade around the coming of Christ because of its medicinal properties. So, what makes ginger so good for us? In one word: Gingerol. Of the 115 different chemical com- ponents found in ginger root, the therapeutic benefi ts come from gingerols, the oily resin from the root that is a highly potent antioxi- dant and anti-infl ammatory agent. These bioactive ingredients, es- pecially gingerol, have been thor- oughly evaluated clinically, and the research backs up why you should use ginger on a regular basis. The health benefi ts from ginger are numerous and include nausea re- lief, digestive support, can help heal ulcers, boosts immunity, improves diabetes, anti-fungal, reduces pain, fi ghts cancer, helps with weight loss, effective on both tension & si- nus headaches as well. It is also a powerful anti-infl ammatory and can help relieve pain & stiffness of arthritis and more. Studies have also shown that ginger extract may be an even more effec- tive anti-cancer agent than chemo- therapy drugs, killing cancerous cells while leaving healthy ones untouched. It's anti-infl ammatory properties might also help prevent the progression of precancerous cells to cancer. This incredible su- per food/herb is 13th on the anti- oxidant list boasting an impres- sive ORAC score of 28,811. Ginger is composed of several volatile oils that give it it's characteristic fl avor and odor: zingerone, shogaols & gingerols. These oils are powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fun- gal & anti-parasitic agents. In ad- dition, it inhibits cancer cell forma- tion while fi ring up our body's own inborn ability to destroy the cancer cells which are already present. Ginger is also very high in potassium which aids in electrical energy pro- duction & detoxifi cation. It is a great source of manganese which protects the lining of the heart, blood vessels and urinary tract. Ginger contains silicon which enhances skin, hair, teeth & nails. It helps assimilate cal- cium and reduces infl ammation in the bone tissue aiding the develop- ment of strong bones and teeth. Ginger is classifi ed as a carmina- tive (reducing intestinal gas)_ and an intestinal spasmolytic (soothes intestinal tract). Ginger is known to reduce fever related nausea, motion sickness and feelings of "morning sickness". Additionally, it helps aid in the production of bile, making it particularly helpful in digesting fats. You can use it in any of it's numer- ous forms...raw, essential oil or powder...they all work great!! By Jackie Deal and Fred Prout and Quartzsite Friend We all know the English language, but do we really "no" it? Suppose we take a walk with a wok. .I remember how last fall I took a fall. It wasn't my fault, it was that deep crack in the ground. Well (a deep subject) how could I run with a run in my stock- ing? Maybe we ought to go by auto, be four, we rode on a good road to the store or was it the circus? That's where we saw (wouldn't cut anything) a lion who was lying (no, I'm not lying) and a bare bear. We had to fl ee from the fl ea circus so we caught a plain plane. Remember when my nice niece came from Nice? She said the snack on her fl ight was jerky and so was the ride. Flew, that was before the fl u, to Alaska and in the snow was written 3.1416, yes, it was the Eskimo Pi. (Thank Fred for that one!) Ah, yes, in Alaska we heard a whale wail and a tree bark. I see ice allover. And Oh, Dear, all the deer! Just like Timber Valley, the dear deer have no fear. And the lurky turkeys; all around, round as can be (where's the can opener?) ENGLISH LANGUAGE PART II How about some of the old-fashioned slang phrases? Maybe even some be- fore our time, Wow! That goes way back. Thanks to a Quartzsite friend (may I say a very good friend?) for supplying most of these. See if you know their meaning: Per- snicity, Balderdash, Gogsnobbeled, Flum fl ox, Jabber wockey, Twitter pated, Cat's Pajamas, Fandangle,G adzooks,Zounds. (My spell checker had fi ts over most of these!) I'm sure, all of U can think of more trivia. So come on, pepper (no salt) the web with your submissions (but don't be too submissive). As plain as the English language
