Quartzsite Food Bank made a bet- ter Thanksgiving possible for almost 400 households. There is no way this could have happened if it had not been for the volunteers who were so generous with their time to spend the day working hard making sure everyone had healthy food on their table. Many things have changed throughout my lifetime. But volun- teering has never changed. Why do people volunteer, when it makes their backs and feet hurt from standing for hours packing and caring boxes at the food bank? From spending countless hours raising funds and buying groceries for Thanksgiving. Because there is nothing else that makes your heart and soul feel so good as volunteering. And now we get to start it all over again for Christmas. Please plan on volunteering this month to help others. The food bank needs hams of all sizes for Christmas baskets. Lois Dupre, President Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank QuartzsiteFoodBank.com Quartzsite Food Bank update "Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." ~Melody Beattie Well, it sure has been an unusual Thanksgiving holiday, right? I hope in the midst of this pandemic, you are still able to fi nd some joy and gratitude. This year, I used Zoom to see both my kids and grands, which we had never done before. Being so far apart, it was truly a blessing to see their shining faces even if on a computer monitor. Over the past few months, I've learned to really enjoy this Zoom thing. As COVID-19 restrictions rise, virtual choirs have sprout- ed up across the globe. I've even joined a few virtual choirs- from England, Australia, and Los Ange- les. I joined the Global Ode To Joy project even before I realized how large this project was. The pre- miere will be Dec. 3rd on Google Arts & Culture's YouTube channel. Leading arts organizations of fi ve continents have come together to launch the Global Ode to Joy (GOTJ). At a time when fear, isola- tion and division dominate so much of our world, this crowd-sourced video project invites us all, as an international community, to unite and celebrate Beethoven's 250th birthday by fl ooding the digital sphere with positivity, hope and joy. Created in collaboration with YouTube and Google Arts & Culture, with support from Germany's offi cial Beethoven anniversary campaign, the project draws inspiration from the composer's beloved "Ode to Joy" chorus and its uplifting message of joy and unity for humankind. A di- verse array of the most joyous video submissions will be selected for an offi cial GOTJ playlist, and the proj- ect will culminate in early Decem- ber, the month of Beethoven's birth, with a grand video fi nale: a GOTJ highlight reel, set to a performance of the "Ode to Joy" itself. Led by conductor Marin Alsop, the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth "Choral" Symphony will be performed on the video fi nale by Austria's ORF Vienna Radio Sym- phony Orchestra, members of GO: The Global Orchestra, and the inter- national Stay at Home Choir. Par- ticipating virtually from all over the world, this choir of thousands will premiere a new English adaptation of Friedrich Schiller's original Ode to Joy poem, commissioned from former U.S. poet laureate Tracy K. Smith by New York's Carnegie Hall. In addition to submitting their own videos, members of the public took part in the Stay at Home Choir's performance, as well as donating to the offi cial GOTJ charity, Music for Relief. It was such a humbling experience and an honor to be a part of sharing a small voice to this project. I hope the project will spark some joy and hope for you in your life today. Be sure to check out the hashtag #GlobalOdeToJoy on your fa- vorite social media channels. And MASK UP ARIZONA!
