Saga #10 - A revitalized recalcitrant ukulele student By Jackie Deal UBIE! Ubie! You're back. Five months of hibernation and you're finally back! For five months you've slouched in the corner and pouted; hey, maybe that's it. You were pout- ing not hibernating. I've known teenagers who pouted longer than that but you're probably not a teen- ager. It does seem strange that Ubie chose to hibernate in the summer, doesn't it? But facts are facts. Yes, I realize you can prove almost any- thing by "facts." A few years back they proved that bathtubs caused cancer in Britain! Do you think the statistics might have reflected that more people with bathtubs, i.e. wealthy, were interviewed for the study than poorer people who didn't have access to health care and so were underrepresented? For those of you who don't have a clue what's being talked about - I mean about Ubie, not Great Britain - Ubie is my ukulele/banjo. Definitely a female; she has a long elegant neck and a smooth round bottom. And af- ter nine episodes of "Saga of an Inept Ukulele Student," she was more-or- less retired. Had I given up? Well, more-or-less, sorta... Okay, Yeah. But her real owner in Quartzsite in- sisted I take her north with me for the summer. Travel is good for the soul, right? (If there isn't such a say- ing, there should be.) She might still be slouched in the corner but a wonderful lady Kathy said she'd read one of my sagas on the Desert Messenger website. She called me and said, "It's obvi- ous you don't know the first thing about playing a ukulele."(Well, Duh!) "I'm starting a class, are you interested?" I missed the first two classes due to self-quarantining but now I've gotten started. Ubie is as willing as ever; she really deserves a better foster-Mother than I am. She now reposes in a little basket right beside my chair. As Kathy said, "If you keep her by your side you're more likely to play her." My fingers are still recalcitrant, "You expect us to bend that way? Huh!" But I did find some finger stretching exercises on the web; they'll probably help. I don't see how they could hinder. Now all you wonderful musicians in Quartzsite (and Oregon too) you can prepare to laugh at my expense. You think you're so smart 'cuz you can play 8 stringed instruments and actu- ally sound good. (It will be awhile before Ubie sounds good.) I've watched; your fingers absolutely come unhinged, and float over the strings. No strings attached. What better time to enjoy music than during a pandemic? Do you have an old instrument that's re- posing behind the couch? Or do you have access to an instrument of any kind? Well, get going. It may lift your soul, raise your spir- its. Sure, the neighbors may snicker and even try to get you evicted but when you're serenading traffic from under the bridge….just think, you might become famous!
