Celebrating its 11th year, this holiday is anything but small, as Americans spent nearly $20 billion last year. But 2020 has been a different beast and this year more than ever before, the small businesses in our community need our support. The COVID19 pandemic has been an existential threat to small business operators with over 100,000 businesses closing permanently between March and June according to a study by Harvard Business School. Small Business Saturday which is slated for November 28th this year, shines a light on the importance of supporting the small businesses that form the backbone of the economy in our local community. According to the 2018 Small Business Economic Impact Study, 67 cents of every dollar spent, stays in the local community. That level of retention can have a huge impact throughout the holiday shopping season as local businesses fight to regain revenue lost to the pandemic. Here are three ways you can support local small businesses on Small Business Saturday: Foot Traffic Be deliberate about stopping by a local small business on November 28th and throughout the holiday season. Many shop owners will be having instore events and specials to help consumers get the most bang for their buck! Pro Tip – Check-in on your social media platform of choice to boost brand awareness for the business within your circle. Go Online With COVID19 numbers and public health being a priority this year, an estimated 60% of shoppers are expected to switch to online shopping. If that includes you, remember to hop over and see what our local businesses have to offer. Look out for options to order online with contactless pickup or free shipping to local buyers. Pro Tip – Go to the Chamber website FAYBIZ.com and check out the Digital Mall. This Shop Local Directory is searchable by category and using keywords. Shop Small Selfie Expand the digital footprint of your favorite local shop by tagging them in a photo. Your social media posts can be seen by more than just your circle of friends; by tagging a small business you make it easier for others in the community to find and support them as well. Pro Tip – The Chamber will be tracking the hashtags #FayettevilleChamber #ShopSmallSelfie . Your photo will be entered into a drawing to win branded swag courtesy of our Chamber member businesses.
