T2 WHATS UP! August 23 - 29, 2020 BY KYLA BREWER TV Media T V sleuths have been staples of prime time for ages, and with good reason. They captivate viewers with tales of mystery, intrigue and drama, not to mention their fascinat- ing personalities. Jack Webb's no-nonsense Joe Friday solved crime in "Dragnet" in the 1950s, Peter Falk fumbled his way to justice as TV's "Colum- bo" for decades in TV series and movies, and Kristen Bell recently returned to the air- waves as the spunky titular character in Hulu's "Veronica Mars." If TV crime solvers have something in common, it's that they're unique. To the delight of fans, one of modern television's most unique de- tectives has returned. Shaun Evans ("Teachers") is back as gifted investigator DS Endeavour Morse in a new ep- isode of "Masterpiece Mys- tery: Endeavour," airing Sun- day, Aug. 23, on PBS. The Brit- ish ITV series serves as a pre- quel to the popular '80s and '90s detective drama "Inspec- tor Morse." In "Endeavour," Evans stars as the younger version of that show's protag- onist, giving fans a glimpse at how his career began with the Oxford City Police CID. Consisting of three inter- connected feature-length films, Season 7 picks up with Morse in 1970. It's a fresh de- cade and a fresh start for the detective, who's left his mem- orable Season 6 mustache in the 1960s. Cleanly shaven, he's ready to tackle new cases alongside his mentor and friend, DCI Fred Thursday, played by Roger Allam ("V for Vendetta," 2005). This season, the unlikely pair tries to solve a number of homicides against the backdrop of the women's liberation movement and in- creasing racial tensions in the '70s. As with all the previous "En- deavour" episodes, each of the three Season 7 installments was written by the show's cre- ator, Russell Lewis ("The Am- bassador"). In an official ITV release about Season 7, "En- deavour" executive producer Roger Allam and Shaun Evans star in "Endeavour" Mystery abounds continued on page T10 TV FEATURE
