Page 6 - Senior's Lifestyle Publication Supplement To Shelby Shopper & Info It's A Good Life – JULY 2010 Kings Mountain Patrick Center Event NEW YOGA CLASS Our new YOGA Class is now meeting on Thursdays from 1:15PM-2:15PM in Conference Room II. This free class is being taught by Marie Jackson, owner and certified massage therapist of Body Junction in Kings Mountain. As we age, many of us stop breathing fully and there can be some loss of flexibility in the ribcage leaving less room for lung expansion. One focus of YOGA is on full inhalations and exha- lations, which can slow down the heart rate, and in turn improve focus and increase concentration. The benefits of YOGA are for the mind as well as the body. Come try out a class or two. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! You might even have a little fun in the process! S.H.O.P. -SENIORS HELPING OTHER PEOPLE It has been approximately one year since we started the S.H.O.P. (Seniors Helping Other People) Project that assists the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry. The response that we have had from each of you has been great and we appreciate all that you are doing. In April 2010, you brought in 26 jars of spaghetti sauce, 1 box of spaghetti noodles, 1 box of saltine crackers, 3 packs of ranch dressing mix, and 3 cans of sweet peas. Nineteen (19) boxes of cereal were collected in May 2010 for S.H.O.P. at the Center. If you would like to join in helping with this project, you just have to bring one item per month to the Center and place it in our blue collection container in the front lobby. (PLEASE DO NOT THROW TRASH IN THE CONTAINER) Please place your items gently into the container. If you can’t help one month, that’s fine, just help when you can. Wouldn’t it be great if we could collect fifty 4 or 5 lbs bags of flour in the month of July 2010? That would be 50 families that could make biscuits, pies, cakes or put flour in a casserole or make some gravy. Can you help us to make this goal a reality? We would also like to collect toothpaste in the month of August. Can you imagine not having toothpaste to brush your teeth with? If you don’t have the money, that is just what would happen. Let’s see if we can col- lect 50 tubes of toothpaste for those who would have to do without. I believe we are given more than we might need by GOD sometimes just so we can share with others and bless them. Have you been blessed? Let’s make sure that the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry has all the flour and toothpaste it needs for July and August. You don’t have to be a senior to help, everyone is welcome to join us in this effort. Just drop off your donations at the Center on Monday—Friday between 8:00AM—5:00PM. Thank you for helping us with S.H.O.P. so that others can be helped. ference in this community. Together we can make a dif- NEWSLETTER SPONSORSHIP—YOU CAN HELP! It is very costly to print and mail out our monthly newsletters ($645) and we need your help. If you, your business, or a business you frequent might be able to sponsor one of our bi-monthly (once every two months) newsletters or have questions, please call Sharon Eaker at the Senior Center. Sponsorship of the newsletter could be very beneficial to a business. First, you would get an ad (8 1/2 x 7 1/2) for your business on one of the pages of our newsletter. Your logo and business information could be included in your advertisement (within city guidelines). Also, we would place a copy of your Ad on each of our four bulletin boards for those two months. Our newsletter is delivered to over 1200 different households in the Kings Mountain area and over 1,000 different people came to the Center last year so this benefit could be very valuable. The cost of an ad is $100, and must be paid the day the ad is given to the Center. The deadlines for ads for the remainder of 2010 are as follows: Wednesday, August 4th for September/October 2010 Newsletter, Wednesday, October 6th for November/December 2010 Newsletter, and Wednesday, December 1st for our January/February 2011 Newsletter. You could also sponsor a monthly newsletter printing and mailing in honor or in memory of a loved one or friend on the $100 ad page. We would gladly include a picture and wish your loved one a Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, or just include some information about the person. We must have all ad copies in the office Fitness Equipment Available Has the doctor suggested you need to start working out or possibly you’ve decided you need get up and get moving? Need a fitness program, but don’t want to pay the cost of a gym membership? Is it too hot to walk outdoors? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we invite you to make the council on Aging/Leona Smith Neal Senior Center’s fitness room part of your on-going or new fitness routine. We have several treadmills, stationary bicycles, and other fitness equipment to help work each section of the body. The equipment is available during Senior Center operational hours 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The Senior Center also has an indoor walking track so you can stay cool while you walk during these hot summer days. There is a charge of $2 per day to use the equipment, unless you are a $50 annual mem- ber of the Senior Center (which is the best deal). In order for the Senior Center to repair existing equipment as well as look into the purchase of new equipment for the fitness room for the public (55+) we must charge this small fee. This small fee is still the best deal in town for use of fitness equipment. You can’t join a gym anywhere in the county for less. New participants must sign a liability waiver and be trained by authorized staff on the use of the equipment. For more information, please call 704-482-3488. Annual member- ships may be purchased at the Neal Senior Center from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. If your New Year’s Resolution was to get in shape, it’s not too late, there’s still half a year to go! I’m Almost 65 — How Should I Prepare for Medicare? Turning 65 is a lot like turning 16. When you turned 16, you didn’t just automatically get your driver’s license; instead you had to take an exam and prove that you were a safe driver. There was a specific order and procedure for getting your driver’s license and the same is true for enrolling in Medicare for the first time when you turn 65. Much like you anticipated turning 16 and getting your driver’s license, you must anticipate and plan for becoming a Medicare beneficiary. Don’t wait until you’re 65 to start thinking about your Medicare choices. Start now and let the Department of Insurance’s SHIIP (Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program) help you. SHIIP provides free, unbiased information about Medicare and other insurance-related issues, and there are SHIIP sites in all 100 counties in North Carolina. It is recommended that you review your Medicare options before you need to enroll so that you don’t make any hurried decisions at the last minute. Your Medicare choices will depend on several factors including: Are you retired or will you or your spouse continue to work? Will you have access to medical and/or prescription drug coverage through an Employer Group Health Plan? How does your Employer Group Health Plan compare with Medicare supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans? Of course there are other things to consider when determining your Medicare options. SHIIP has created a handout meant to help you navigate the Medicare system and initial enroll- ment process. The handout, “The Road to Medicare,” outlines the decisions you’ll need to make and what options are available through the Medicare system. To obtain a free copy of “The Road to Medicare” call SHIIP at 1-800-443-9354, Council on Aging/Senior Center 704-482- 3488 or by visit SHIIP’s Web site at www.ncshiip.com. You can also meet with a certified SHIIP Volunteer Counselor at The Council on Aging/ Senior Center located at 100 T.R. Harris Drive Shelby to discuss your Medicare options. To arrange an appointment with a SHIIP Volunteer Counselor please call for an appointment at 704-482-3488. Don’t wait to make your Medicare decisions — you can start the process before your 65th birthday. Let SHIIP help you understand your options and get you on the road to Medicare. Kings Mountain Patrick Center Events by the deadlines. Ads need to be in an 8 1/2 X 7 1/2 page format that can be copied into our Microsoft Publisher newsletter document and we prefer that you e-mail that information to us. Logos can be included if they can be copied from your document to our newsletter. Our newsletter is the best way we have to get the word out to our seniors about the services, activities, and programs available to them at the Center. The actual cost of a year’s worth of newsletters mailed to your home is $3.23, and if it is picked up at the Center, the cost is $2.48. If everyone receiving a newsletter made this small donation per year, the cost of our newsletter would be taken care of. I know some of you are unable to help and that is fine. We will not stop your newsletter because you can not pay. Everyone working together can make a BIG difference! FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC FOR SENIORS The Center will have its annual Fourth of July celebration on Friday, July 2nd at the home of Sharon Eaker at 1216 Shelby Highway in Cherryville from 10:30AM—1:00PM.
