Happy Birthday America Fireworks Show & Independence Day Celebration At Cleveland Mall July 2nd Cleveland Mall’s annual Independence Day celebra- tion and fireworks show will take place Friday, July 2 from 4:30 to 10pm providing fun and entertainment for families in and around Cleveland County. The fes- tivities will begin at 4:30pm with rides and inflatables from Miracle Amusements Inc. for adults and children to enjoy. Everyone can delight in the mouthwatering festival food to be had, including funnel cakes, candy apples, and cotton candy. The Party in the Plaza will start at 6pm with Captain Ron’s Beach & Boogie playing hits from the Fifties to today. A military tribute ceremony will be held at 9pm to honor our veterans and those serving in the Armed Forces. The National Anthem will be performed by Bucky Reynolds, music major at Gardner-Webb University. The evening will come to a close with an impressive fireworks display sure to amaze observers of all ages. Piecemakers Quilt Guild “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM – 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors are welcome. Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting. On July 7th members meet for the annual picnic. This class will explore a variety of job opportunities in the healthcare industry. Classes will meet two days a week for 10 weeks. The Continuing Education Department at Cleveland Community College is offering displaced workers an opportunity to sharpen their “soft skills” set through a series of classes focused on improving problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills for displaced workers. These are the skills many employers evaluate during the hiring process. Class begins on July 7 and will meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. through July 23, 2010. Look no further! The town of Lattimore would like to invite you to attend the annual Fourth of July Parade and Celebration on Saturday, July 3rd. The parade lineup will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the parade march will begin on Towery Road/Oak Drive at 9:00 a.m. Parade entries will include floats, antique cars, horses, tractors, and much more! At the conclusion of the parade, a patriotic program will be presented at the recreation park of Lattimore Baptist Church. The celebration will begin around 10 a.m. and will include the recognition of veterans and entertainment. This year’s featured entertainment is the Leonard McSwain Band. This favorite local group will play a variety of bluegrass and Gospel numbers. An “air-bounce” ride for the children will ensure that there is fun for entire family! Since no celebration is complete without food, the Lattimore Baptist Church youth group will be selling both country ham, sausage, and livermush biscuits and drinks along the parade route beginning at 8:15 a.m. Biscuits, hotdogs, drinks, and home- made desserts will be sold at the recreation park. All proceeds will go toward funding youth activities such as summer camp. Boys & Girls Club Summer Day Camp The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County is now holding registration for the 2010 Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp. Open registration will be held weekdays from 2 PM to 7 PM. at the Boys & Girls Club building, located at 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby. Parent Packets, which contain all registration materials and program information, are available during the Club’s regular After-School program hours. Registration is ongoing, space permitting, first come-first served. The 2010 Summer Day Camp schedule offers three sessions, each spanning three weeks. Session 2 is Tuesday, July 6 through Friday, July 23. Session 3 is Monday, July 26 through Friday, August 13. Day Camp operates weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:30 in the evening with the program schedule varying daily. Campers par- ticipate in structured daily Club activities in which they are placed with children of like age. The Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp is open to all boys and girls, rising first graders through age 16. Registration restrictions apply to campers 15 & 16 years of age. Parents wishing to register these older campers should contact the Club office for additional details. Financial Assistance is available with regular Day Camp session fees based on a sliding scale according to income. Details on fees are available through the Boys & Girls Club office. Kings Mountain Historical Museum The Museum is pleased to announce the opening of What Did Our Ancestors Wear? which will run through August 21. Many examples of clothing, accessories, undergarments from the 18th to mid 20th century. Featuring a “dress-up corner” for chil- dren to try on reproduction clothing and have their picture taken. Citizen’s Police Academy The Shelby Police Department is currently taking applications for our Citizen’s Police Academy sched- uled to start August 5th, 2010. This will be an eight- week class that will meet each Thursday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Excel Youth Academy located at 706 Julius Street. The classes are designed to educate citizens on how our police department operates on a daily basis. Due to the sensitive nature of police work, a background check will be conducted to ensure you meet our eligibility require- ments. You must meet te following requirements: • Must be at least 18 years of age • Live, work or attend school in Shelby, NC • No felony convictions • No misdemeanor convictions within the past three years. The Chief of Police may waive any of the requirements.
